Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is a limited liability company incorporated in Uganda under the Companies Act. UEDCL owns the 33KV and below voltage electricity distribution networks and all the operational assets associated with the business.
Job Summary: To support the management of claims involving the company by conducting thorough investigations, providing legal analysis and ensuring effective resolution of claims. The Legal Officer – Claims plays a key role in minimizing financial and reputational risks while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and policies.
Impact: This position is critical to managing legal claims effectively, minimizing liabilities and safeguarding the company’s assets and reputation. Through diligent handling of claims, it supports operational stability and legal compliance.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Investigate, assess and process claims filed against or by the company ensuring timely and effective resolution
- Collaborate with relevant departments to gather evidence and information related to claims
- Provide legal opinions and recommendations on claims to guide management decisions
- Analyze risks associated with claims and propose mitigation strategies
- Assist in negotiating claim settlements to achieve favorable outcomes for the company
- Liaise with external legal counsel or third parties as necessary
- Ensure claims handling complies with legal and regulatory requirements
- Maintain accurate and organized records of all claims and related legal documents
- Supervise the Legal Assistant in claims-related tasks to ensure accuracy and efficiency
- Provide guidance and mentorship to support the professional development of the Legal Assistant
- Prepare and present reports on claims, highlighting key findings, progress, and outcomes
- Act as a point of contact for internal and external stakeholders involved in claims processes.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) from a recognized institution
- Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (Law School Certification)
- Admission to the Bar as a licensed advocate.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of post-admission legal experience, with a focus on claims management, dispute resolution, or litigation
- Experience in handling claims within the utilities or energy sector is an advantage
- Proven expertise in negotiating settlements and preparing legal documentation.

- Strong understanding of claims management processes and relevant laws
- Proficiency in legal drafting, negotiation, and risk analysis
- Familiarity with litigation and alternative dispute resolution practices
- High level of integrity and ethical judgment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple claims effectively under tight deadlines
- Leadership and mentoring capabilities for supervising the Legal Assistant
- Proficiency in legal research tools and case management systems
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
