About Organisation:
Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) is a non-profit biomedical research Organization, whose mission is to mitigate disease threats through quality research, healthcare and disease surveillance. MUWRP was established in 2002 by a Memorandum of Agreement between The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, Inc. (HJF) and Makerere University (Mak) to undertake medical research to test HIV vaccines. Over the years, MUWRP’s portfolio has progressively expanded to include vaccine research for Ebola and Marburg viruses, surveillance of influenza and influenza- like viruses and other emerging infections in humans and animals; also epidemiological, basic and implementation research in HIV treatment, care and prevention programs in the Districts of Kayunga, Mukono, Buvuma and Buikwe.
Job Summary: The Program Nurse – VMMC will provide technical support in the planning and implementation of VMMC program in static and outreach sites.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of MUWRP supervisors, provide nursing and /or surgical theatre assistant services as a member of a fixed or mobile safe male circumcision team.
- Assist in minor surgical procedures as per WHO/MOH guidelines under the guidance of technical advisors.
- Conduct Health Education session and /routine physical examinations.
- Ensure patient safety and confidentiality.
- Participate in complete, timely and accurate documentation of all surgical and follow –up procedures.
- Maintain surgical instruments and theatre equipment
- Other duties as requested.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Diploma in nursing. Registered and Licensed with the Nursing Council of Uganda
- Training in the Uganda HIV Prevention, care and treatment guidelines 2020 and VMMC service provision
- Three years of experience in the implementation of VMMC program
- Ability to work and reside in Kayunga.
- Capability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Professional communication skills in writing, verbally, and through other appropriate means.
- Uganda HIV/AIDS Prevention, care and guidelines.
- Training as a Medical Theatre Assistant
- Formal training in HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and Treatment Including Antiretroviral Therapy and Palliative Care
- Formal Training ‘in Adolescent and Adult Medical male Circumcision under local Anesthesia
- Formal training in counselling, especially youth counselling.
Personal Attributes & Physical ability:
- Excellent interpersonal /communication skills
- Commitment to accomplishing designated goals and targets in service provision.
- Fluency in verbal and written English, able to fluently read and speak Luganda.
- Ability to meet very tight deadlines.
- Ability to permanently reside in Luwero/Nakasongola
- Ability to frequently travel to the MUWRP PEPFAR supported sites in Buikwe, Kayunga, Mukono, Nakasongola, Luwero and Buvuma Islands
