About the Company:
PEAS is an international education not-for-profit organisation with the mission to ‘expand access to sustainably delivered, quality secondary education across Africa. Since 2008, PEAS has built and operated high quality low-cost not-for-profit secondary schools in close partnership with government in communities where there is urgent unmet demand for secondary education. We currently run 28 secondary schools in Uganda and 4 in Zambia serving over 15,000 students.
Job Summary: The Communication Officer is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive communication strategy that aligns with PEAS’ organizational goals and enhances visibility and impact. The role involves managing internal and external communication efforts, ensuring the effective dissemination of information through media channels, and generating compelling content to showcase PEAS’ achievements.
The Communication Officer will lead initiatives to raise PEAS’ profile nationally and internationally, create human interest stories, manage social media platforms, and ensure branding consistency across all communications. This position also supports business development and fosters collaboration with strategic partners, donors, and stakeholders.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Communication Strategy Development and Implementation
- Develop and roll out a comprehensive communication strategy aligned with PEAS’ global goals and priorities.
- Identify and package key impact stories for internal and external audiences, working closely with senior leadership to disseminate information effectively.
- Regularly review and update communication plans to ensure relevance and alignment with organizational objectives.
Media and Branding
- Lead media-facing events and identify appropriate media channels to reach target beneficiaries.
- Produce communication materials (e.g., brochures, leaflets, videos, and social media content) to profile PEAS’ work in Uganda.
- Ensure branding, marking, and accessibility consistency across events, messages, and products.
- Build and maintain relationships with national and local media outlets to increase visibility.
Content Creation and Management
- Generate human interest stories from field activities, showcasing PEAS’ impact.
- Manage digital media content creation for social media platforms and the PEAS website.
- Support the development of online and offline tools for business development.
- Collaborate with teams to assemble, coordinate, and update website material.
Collaboration and Representation
- Work with the Business Development and Programmes teams to collect and package materials for events and donor outreach.
- Represent PEAS at external meetings and events, ensuring alignment with corporate communication guidelines.
- Coordinate media field trips, coverage, and events to enhance PEAS’ presence.
Knowledge Sharing and Capacity Building
- Improve knowledge management systems by creating and maintaining templates, processes, and resources for communication.
- Train staff on communication tools and strategies to ensure cohesive messaging across departments.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Essential:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, or a related field.
- At least 4 years of experience in a similar or related communication role.
- Excellent communication, creative writing, and computer skills.
- Proven ability to take high-quality photos and video content.
- Strong mobilization and teamwork skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and under minimal supervision.
Desired:
- Knowledge of education-related communication and branding.
- Experience working with local media channels and established networks.
- Familiarity with current communication trends and social media platforms.
