Job Summary:  The Surveillance Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the surveillance/EVD response activities in the division/at City Hall EOC. S/he will work with KCCA MOH to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate surveillance activities in the Kampala City. The Officer will be seconded to KCCA and work with their surveillance teams and MOH to produce quality daily updates and weekly reports including alert report, sitreps and updates. S/he will support timely accurate reporting of surveillance data in the division/city

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure implementation of the EVD response and recovery activities in the five KCCA divisions
  • Review surveillance data on a daily basis to identify trends and vulnerabilities linked to provision of services and population mobility/infectious disease risk, make recommendations for improvement, and ensure follow up action is instituted
  • Provide ongoing technical support to the KCCA staff to improve the surveillance systems
  • Review surveillance data outputs for quality, timeliness, completeness, and provide feedback and follow-up to ensure data quality.
  • Provide documentation of the EVD response in the city and the lessons learned for future reference
  • Support the Health facilities within the city surveillance system to improve reporting
  • Organize regular meetings between KCCA, health facilities and implementing partners
  • Participate in monitoring and supportive supervision activities for community level health interventions
  • Participate and implement community health campaigns in the city
  • Undertake other activities assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Degree in a medical field (Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy) or Public Health or Statistics/Computer Sciences
  • Master’s degree in Public Health is an added advantage
  • At least three years’ related experience, at district level surveillance programs
  • Technical and programmatic expertise in public health programming for infectious diseases
  • Experience in urban health/community level health interventions
  • Knowledge and experience of implementing infectious diseases surveillance activities
  • Good communication skills
  • Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in computer use for data analysis
  • Ability and willingness to work in the community
