About UNHCR:
The Office of the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14,
1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. UNHCR’s mandate under the Statute
of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is to lead
and co-ordinate action for international protection to refugees; seek permanent
solutions for the problems of refugees and safeguard refugee rights and
well-being. UNHCR has an additional mandate concerning issues of statelessness,
as it is given a designated role under Article 11 of the 1961 Convention on the
Reduction of Statelessness.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • Distributes incoming cables, messages,
    and other communication in accordance with established instructions;
  • Ensures that all communications handed
    to him/her for transmission are properly prepared and authorized and
    promptly transmitted;
  • Selects the most efficient and economic
    means for the transmission of messages, taking into consideration the
    nature and priority of communications to be transmitted;
  • Maintains a station log where all
    occurrences related to the operation of the telecommunication equipment
    are entered;
  • Ensures that no unauthorised
    communications are exchanged on the network;
  • Ensures that all the equipment placed
    under his/her responsibility is maintained in good working condition;
  • Supports new staff members in the proper
    operation of telecommunication equipment;
  • Performs secretarial functions, such as
    handling paper work on routine, matters, arranges appointment/meetings
    both internally and externally, screening telephone calls, types a wide
    variety of materials from drafts, printed text, using a word processor.
  • May assist in making Travel
    arrangements. 


Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the United
    Nations UNHCR Telecoms Operator job placement should have completed
    secondary education with training or Certificate in
    radio/telecommunications.
  • At least two years previous job
    experience
  • Good communication skills (written and
    oral). 
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of
    a team but also independently, in a multi-cultural environment. 
  • Knowledge of the UN system. 
  • Ability to work in remote areas.
  • English language is essential for the
    work of the post.
