Job Summary: The ESG & Sustainability Governance Manager will be responsible for coordinating, monitoring, and supporting the implementation of the Uganda Banking Industry Sustainability Framework (UBISF) and the Bank’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda across all business functions. The role holder will support the integration of sustainability principles into the Bank’s governance structures, policies, procedures, risk management processes, lending activities, operations, products and stakeholder engagements. The role will serve as the focal point for sustainability governance matters and will work closely with business units to embed sustainable banking practices throughout the Bank.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Support the Bank in implementing the Uganda Banking Industry Sustainability Framework.
• Facilitate the integration of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations into the Bank’s risk management and business processes.
• Strengthen sustainability governance structures and oversight mechanisms across the Bank.
• Promote sustainable banking practices and responsible business conduct. Support the identification, monitoring, management of sustainability and climate-related risks.
• Coordinate sustainability reporting and performance monitoring and enhance staff awareness/capacity in sustainability and ESG matters.
• Monitor compliance with the Bank’s sustainability commitments, policies and regulatory obligations.
• Facilitate the integration of sustainability considerations into the Bank’s governance, operational, credit, procurement and business processes.
• Coordinate the implementation of Board and Management directives relating to sustainability and ESG matters.
• Monitor progress against sustainability action plans, commitments and targets approved by Management and the Board.
• Support the integration of sustainability objectives into departmental plans and performance monitoring processes.
• Coordinate sustainability governance committee meetings and maintain action trackers for follow-up and closure.
• Ensure sustainability policies, procedures and governance documents remain current and aligned with regulatory and industry requirements.
• Monitor emerging sustainability developments, regulations, industry standards and best practices relevant to the banking sector.
• Support initiatives that promote sustainable finance, responsible lending, financial inclusion, environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
• Support the development, review and implementation of Sustainability, ESG, Climate Risk, and Environmental & Social Risk Management (ESRM) policies and procedures.
• Support the integration of Environmental, Social, Climate and Governance risks into the Enterprise Risk Management Framework.
• Assist in identifying, assessing, monitoring and reporting sustainability-related risks across the Bank.
• Maintain Sustainability and ESG Risk Registers and monitor the implementation of agreed mitigation measures.
• Coordinate Environmental and Social Risk Assessments for lending and investment activities where applicable.
• Monitor the Bank’s exposure to environmental, social, governance and climate-related risks.
• Support business units in implementing sustainability risk controls and mitigation measures.
• Track compliance with Environmental and Social Risk Management requirements throughout the customer lifecycle.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual sustainability reports for Management, Board Committees and Regulators.
• Develop and maintain Sustainability Dashboards, Scorecards, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Management Information Reports (MIS).
• Monitor implementation of sustainability commitments and track performance against approved targets.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental management, Sustainability, Risk Management, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Accounting, Development Studies, Natural Sciences, Law or a related field.
• Professional Certification in ESG or Sustainability, Sustainable Finance, Climate Risk Certification, Environmental and Social Risk Management (ESRM) Certification and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems training is an added advantage.
• Minimum of five (5) years’ working experience, two (2) of which should have been in sustainability, ESG, risk management, governance, compliance, audit, strategy, or related areas.
• Experience within the banking or financial services sector is preferred.
• Experience in policy implementation, reporting, governance, and stakeholder engagement.
• Demonstrated experience coordinating cross-functional initiatives and monitoring compliance with organizational frameworks.

• Strong analytical, monitoring and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
• Ability to analyze sustainability and ESG data.
• Strong stakeholder management and coordination skills.
