About Organisation:
The Security Council, by its resolution 1990 PDF Document of 27 June 2011, responded to the urgent situation in Sudan’s Abyei region by establishing the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA). The Security Council was deeply concerned by the violence, escalating tensions and population displacement. The operation will monitor the flashpoint border between north and south, and is authorized to use force in protecting civilians and humanitarian workers in Abyei. UNISFA’s establishment came after the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) reached an agreement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to demilitarize Abyei and let Ethiopian troops to monitor the area.
Job Summary: The Air Operations Assistant reports to the Associate Air Operations Officer, Entebbe or designated supervisor. The incumbent supports the coordination, monitoring, safety, and emergency response aspects of UN aviation operations, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of aircraft, passengers, cargo, and aviation support services in accordance with United Nations aviation standards and procedures.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Within delegated authority, the Air Operations Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
- Perform Flight operations tasks, including assisting with the scheduling of UN Flights, arranging airspace and landing clearances, and ordering Ground Handling services.
- Assist aircrew in their dispatch at the airport; Coordinate with the Ground Handling Agent regarding all requirements for aircrew facilitation.
- Coordinate with the Ground Handling Agents on all issues related to operations with Mission aircraft, including but not limited to the following: cleaning services, ground handling equipment, refueling, transportation, and verification of service ordered.
- Check weather forecast and NOTAMs and share with relevant parties.
- Use radios and Flight Tracking systems to monitor the position and movements of UN aircraft.
- Maintain accurate records of activities related to flight following, aircraft dispatch, and technical compliance.
- Enter reports into the radio log; complete radio logs in accordance with the Daily Flight Schedule and Aviation standards.
- Complete the Aviation Operations Risk Management Checklist.
- Coordinate with local Authorities (Civil Aviation Authority, Airport Authority) on all requirements in support of Mission air operations, including but not limited to airport passes, authorizations, escorting staff in and out of the airport, plan and coordinate for maintenance hangar space, and support equipment required, etc.
- Collect and analyze Aircraft Use Reports (AURs) and prepare Flight Hour Reports (FHRs) for each flight for all aircraft daily.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Education
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
- A technical or vocational certificate in Air Transportation, Aircraft Flight Operations, Dispatch, Safety Management, and or Air Operations is desirable.
Work Experience
- At least 3 years of progressively responsible experience in aviation, including at least 2 years of experience in an occupation directly related to air transport operations is required.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required. The table below shows the minimum required level for each skill in these languages, according to the UN Language Framework
