Job Summary: Coordinate the development, implementation and monitoring of road safety initiatives across PDFL’s owned and outsourced fleet operations, reducing accidents and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The role sits within Logistics/Fleet and works under the specialist technical guidance of EHS on matters such as PPE, driver/rider safety training and fatigue management, while supported by the Fleet Vehicle Tracking systems for continuous vehicle monitoring.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement road safety policies, procedures and guidelines, in consultation with EHS and Fleet Management.
- Conduct road safety risk assessments and identify areas for improvement.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across Logistics, EHS, Security and other
- departments to promote road safety awareness and education.
- Monitor and analyse road safety data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
- Develop and manage road safety training programs for employees and drivers, including specialist areas such as PPE selection for riders (e.g. Tuk Tuk riders) and fatigue management for truck drivers, drawing on EHS technical guidance.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
- Investigate and report on road incidents and accidents.
- Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to prevent future recurrence of incidents.
- Liaise with outsourced transport providers to ensure compliance with the company’s road safety management plan.
- Use data from the Fleet Vehicle Tracking systems to support continuous monitoring of vehicles, feeding safety-related findings into the road safety management plan.
- Support road safety requirements for upcountry operations, including milk tanker operations in Mbarara, in coordination with the relevant operations teams.
- Prepare monthly road safety performance reports for management.
- Recommend initiatives to improve road safety performance.
- Work with management and transport providers to integrate road safety requirements into contracts and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Escalate matters requiring specialist EHS technical input or oversight to the EHS Manager
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Diploma or Degree in a relevant field (e.g. Road/Transport Safety, Fleet Management, Occupational Health & Safety, or related).
- Experience
- Relevant experience in road/fleet safety gained within a large transport, oil, or FMCG organisation, including experience supporting a more senior safety professional.
- Familiarity with road safety regulations, laws and industry standards, including PPE requirements and fatigue management practices for drivers/riders.
- Technical & Behavioural Competencies
- Strong knowledge of road safety coordination or a related field.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to work effectively across a dual reporting relationship (Fleet direct line / EHS dotted line).
- Ability to analyse data and develop effective solutions.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
