The Medical Research
Council (MRC UK) is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with
dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines
and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary
approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research,
social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation
studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the
evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the
development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following
the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of
Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council
(MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018. The exciting new
partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health
issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI
Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala
Districts.
Job Summary: The Medical Officer will participate in the
recruitment, clinical evaluation, care and follow-up of participants in the
OPTIMMS trial (i.e. Optimizing DTP-containing vaccine infant immunization
schedules in UGANDA) at three different study hubs in Masaka district according
to unit SOPs and approved protocol.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participates in development and review of protocol and other study
materials; - Ensures compliance with protocols and ICH/GCP guidelines;
- Development and updating of SOPs and helping ensure compliance with
SOPs; - Coordination of clinical activities of the OPTIMMS study at the
Masaka site; - Obtains informed consent and conducts screening, enrolment and
follow up of study participants; - Provides clinical care to study participants and conducts referrals
appropriately; - Collects data as required by the protocol, completes source
documents and CRFs and resolves queries; - Assists in training of project personnel on the protocol, study
procedures and any other CMEs; - Supervises clinic study team members and delegates responsibilities
appropriately; - Liaises with study monitors, laboratory staff, counsellors, field
workers data and statistical department; - Prepares regular reports of clinical activities;
- Attends teleconferences and meetings (monthly I-Vac Programme
meetings, clinic meetings, UVRI Science seminars, etc.) and presents at
different fora as needed; - Provides technical guidance and health education to parents and
guardians during study visits; - Participates in training and organising site and project meetings;
- Participates in writing papers for conferences and publications;
and, - Performs other duties assigned by the Principal Investigator.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery
(MBChB); - Postgraduate qualifications in public health, epidemiology or other
related field is an added advantage; - Possession of GCP/ICH and Human Subject Protection certification;
- At least two years of experience in clinical research setting;
- Experience in management of children and HIV infection in adults;
- At least two years’ experience in clinical practice post-internship;
- Maternal and child health experience is desired;
- Possession of an appropriate and up-to-date licensure with Uganda
Medical and Dental Practitioners Council; - Knowledge of pediatric immunization;
- Ability to diagnose and treat common pediatric acute and chronic
illnesses; - Good understanding of Phases I-IV of clinical trials;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; and,
- Good communication skills.
