Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (ACTV) is a Non- Governmental organisation
in Uganda since 1993 whose mandate is to provide physical and psychological
treatment and rehabilitation including legal advice to survivors of torture as
well as to advocate against torture.
Officers will be responsible for advocating against torture as well as provide
pro bono legal services to survivors of torture plus giving support to the rest
of the team in accordance with the stipulated guidelines.
- Manage
and carry out visits to places of detention to offer legal advice - Actively
facilitate in awareness/sensitization workshops for communities and security
officers on human rights and torture - Offer
legal support to clients, referrals for legal redress and client follow
ups - Significantly
contribute to proposal writing and other ACTV Fundraising Initiatives - Offer
technical support to legal advocacy and networking initiatives for ACTV - Take
part in the planning and Budgeting for the Legal department as per ACTV
guidelines - In
charge of preparing and sending periodic reports for the unit as per the
agreed timelines - Offer
legal advisory and interpretation services to management on various aspects
on the existing law and regulatory requirements, also liaise with ACTV
external lawyers to ensure agreements and legal documents are promptly
acted upon. - Draft,
Review and advice on MOUs between ACTV and other organizations - Responsible
for preparing requisite documentation for renewal of ACTV NGO practicing certificate
and file all required returns to NGO Board and Company registrar. - Ensure
that all Board resolutions are registered with the Registrar of Companies
and adequately filed - Perform
any other work related duties as assigned by supervisor
- The
ideal candidate must hold a University Degree in Law and a Post Graduate
Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre. - A
minimum of three years of progressively responsible professional work
experience in offering legal aid preferably with local and/or
international NGOs and/or non-profit organizations - Detailed
knowledge and understanding of development and humanitarian needs and
issues in areas of human rights and torture. - Excellent
interpersonal communication skills to build rapport with staff, partners,
government officials and development partners. - Personal
Competencies: Superior
organizational skills and ability to multi-task on a constant basis,
Ability to work under pressure meeting deadlines in a fast paced fluid
environment, Creative and flexible with good problem solving skills,
Dynamic, proactive self-starter able to work independently and have
effective cross-cultural communication skills
