Job Summary: The Livelihoods & Resilience Officer will work closely with the Project Coordinator to implement on-farm and off-farm project activities under the Livelihoods and Resilience Project. The successful candidate must possess strong theoretical and practical field skills, an appreciation of interdisciplinary work, and a core commitment to achieving science-led agribusiness and agricultural development.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with different on-farm and off-farm livelihoods groups, community social structures, and an interdisciplinary team of agronomists and technical experts, including the district production department and other relevant stakeholders, to promote appropriate crop and animal production and productivity technologies.
  • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders, including the private sector and agribusiness companies, to achieve desired agronomy outcomes.
  • Contribute to resource mobilization through idea development and relationships management.
  • Communicate key messages to farmers, agro-dealers, and extension staff.
  • Monitor program implementation by staff, volunteers, contractors, consultants, and grantees in accordance with agreements, work plans, deliverables, and timelines.
  • Promote food systems and nutritional security.
  • Review existing agricultural development proposals, plans, and budgets, and advise on feasible alternative solutions.
  • Coordinate with HFU digital financial inclusion teams to train target beneficiaries on tailored programs.
  • With support from the Market Support Facilitator, establish and strengthen linkages for different market-based livelihoods and agro-processed products to increase income and resilience.
  • Develop templates and guidelines for better management, monitoring, tracking, and use of project agro-inputs like seeds, livestock, postharvest materials, agro-tools, startup kits, and other related inputs.
  • Support HFU staff and volunteers engaged in project livelihoods and the execution of all agricultural development schemes, extension services, and farmer training, including demonstrations and trials.
  • Participate in Social Behavioral Change and Communication (SBCC) activities, especially for livelihoods-related interventions.
  • Promote the production, consumption, and marketing of nutrient-dense foods for enhanced nutrition and income.
  • Integrate environmental conservation and protection activities, including tree farming, orchard establishment, and training targeted groups on alternative energy-saving techniques and optimal land use management.
  • Identify opportunities for developing HFU’s profile in livelihoods and recommend actions to enhance participation in settlement, district, and national livelihood sector working groups.
  • Develop technical content for training materials relevant to different fertilizer blend products.
  • Provide technical support to farmer groups and agro-dealers, including:
    • Working with refugee and host community farmer groups, extension staff, and agro-dealers to cascade best agronomical practices and support agro-enterprises.
    • Conducting regular field visits to assess the adoption of good agricultural practices.
    • Conducting regular training for farmer groups and agro-dealers in good agricultural practices, postharvest handling, value addition, and the safe use and handling of agro-chemicals.
    • Coordinating with research and agro-input and technology service providers to support technology transfer to target farmer groups.
    • Organizing farmer field days in collaboration with farmers, agro-dealers, and extension staff to promote cross-learning among farmer groups.
    • Developing plans for testing agro-products on commercial and small-holder farms.
    • Preparing, submitting, and keeping records of weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on all technical agronomy operations and activities.
  • Ensure systematic documentation and filing.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the organization.





Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Educational Background: The ideal candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, majoring in Crop Science, Livestock Production, Agriculture Extension, Agribusiness, Rural Innovations Systems, or related fields. Postgraduate training in Project Planning and Management or Monitoring and Evaluation will be an added advantage.
  • Work Experience: At least three years of practical work experience in the agriculture sector or working with both smallholder and large-scale farmers. Experience in networking with researchers and other actors in the agriculture sector is essential.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge, with demonstrable skills and experience in crop production and animal production value chains.
  • Proficiency in agronomy, integrated pest management (including organic fertilizer and pesticide production), and nursery management.
  • A thorough understanding of the most appropriate varieties of field and vegetable crops.
  • Essential knowledge and skills in irrigation, soil, and water conservation.
  • Proven ability to plan, implement, monitor, and control crop production cycles efficiently and effectively, in relation to the seasonal livelihoods calendar of the district of operation.
  • Skills in planning and developing business cases for different enterprises, guiding beneficiaries on the most profitable crop enterprises, identifying common pests, and observing nutrient deficiencies.
  • Experience in addressing agricultural market aspects, with successful market linkages and development interventions.

  • Technical Proficiency: Knowledge and skills in computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
