Rehabilitation Services in Uganda (for people with disability) was established
in 2006 as a private non-profit, non-governmental organization and is supported
by CBM (Christian Blind Mission). CoRSU Rehabilitation Hospital and
Rehabilitation Centre on Entebbe Road provides Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastic
Surgery and Rehabilitation, mainly for children with disability.
Job Summary: The Anesthesiologist will actively participate
in the Anaesthetic services in the hospital including perioperative care and
providing safe anaesthesia. Assist the Head of Department with supervising the
Anaesthetic officers, running the lists, overseeing patients on HDU and
reviewing postoperative pain management..
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Actively offer Anaesthetic services including perioperative care and
providing safe Anaesthesia. - Assess patients preoperatively.
- Discuss all difficult patients with the Head of Department and
Surgeon(s) involved. - Provide clear, understandable information to patients about the
anaesthetic procedures to be undertaken. - Provide anaesthesia and pain management for the admitted patients
and review patients’ postoperative pain requirements as necessary. - Provide advice and assistance with complex patients and emergencies
on the ward or in theatre. - Participate in the development of a High Dependency Care Unit (HDU)
and coordinate its activities and review patients on HDU as required. - Provide safe, high quality anaesthesia.
- Oversee the running and protocols in the PACU.
- Ensure regular CPD for the department.
- Coordinate CPR training for the nurses and other hospital staff.
- Contribute to activities of the AAU.
- Identify team manpower gaps, promotional and training needs and make
recommendations as necessary to the immediate supervisor. - Participate in the hospital CME and morbidity/mortality meetings.
- Ensure all equipment is well maintained and review equipment needs
regularly. - Plan and budget for continued upgrading of the department.
- Develop SOPs for theatre.
- Oversee the rota for each theatre and on call arrangements
- Provide the necessary support to the Head of Department like helping
with appraisals of the Anaesthetic officers
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must hold an MBChB from a recognized University.
- MMed (Anaesthesia) from a recognized university or equivalent
postgraduate qualification in anaesthesia e.g. FRCA. - Registration with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners
Council - At least two years of
post-qualification experience. - Experience of working in the NGO/Not-for- Profit hospital is an
advantage). - Teaching experience
- Excellent communication and coordination skills
- Willingness to work beyond expected hours and occasionally take on
o-call duties. - Thorough knowledge of MS Office, programme management software
- Good understanding of disability.
