About US:
The MRC/UVRI Uganda
Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from
the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the
research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired
Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related
research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies,
clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural
studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to
inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific
publications in peer reviewed journals over time.
Job Summary: The Unit Pharmacist is mainly responsible for
general and specific pharmaceutical related activities in each of the clinical
research studies carried out in the Unit involving investigational products.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise and support all pharmacy related activities for the Unit
and all the unit’s stations including Procurement, supply, accountability,
importation of drugs, vaccines and medical equipment and all regulatory
aspects for the Unit. - Carry out in-house trainings on supply chain management to build
capacity of the available pharmacy team at the other MRC sites-Masaka,
Kyamulibwa and Mengo. - Incorporate pharmacy inventory systems as part of good pharmacy
practice in the organization’s activities. - Carry out protocol reviews for various projects work through
investigational product related issues with principal investigators and
offering pharmaceutical advice. - Development and review of study tools (SOPs, checklists, temperature
logs, drug transfer logs, drug inventory logs, inventory data bases) - Participation in annual National Medicines Policy and Pharmaceutical
sector strategic planning meetings. - Participate in forecasting and procurement of medicines and devices
including Anti-retroviral drugs for the Unit. - Participate in quality assurance audits at the MRC unit and carrying
out risk management analyses in the pharmacies. - Oversee the regulatory drug requirements of the unit and liaising
with key leaders at the National Drug Authority concerning study drugs. - Oversee the importation and exportation of drugs, devices and
vaccines for the Unit. - Management and maintenance of pharmacy files (drug inventory
records, shipment records, storage and temperature logs, delegation logs,
document control logs) - Day to day coordination of pharmacy related activities (procurement,
destruction of drugs, inventory management, drug transfers, dispensing,
and training of pharmacy staff) - Supervise, mentor and support pharmacy team members (pharmacy
technicians, nurses) - Support clinicians on pharmacy related issues (dosing,
contraindications, appropriate regimens) - Support the quality assurance department, the laboratory and health
and safety departments to ensure quality checks are in place. - Participate in recruitment of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians
- Quality management and control (ensuring completeness of drug prescriptions,
data cleaning. - Coordinate the destruction of all study and non-study drugs and
products retained after each study including expired drugs and ensuring
that they are properly disposed of - Management of clinical supplies
- Dispensing of medicines to patients when the pharmacy technician
requires support. - Participating in investigator and stakeholders’ meetings
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Medical Research Council
(MRC) UK / UVRI Unit Pharmacist job must hold a Bachelor’s
Degree in Pharmacy from a recognized University - Possession of a Masters in Clinical Trials, Public Health, Pharmacy,
Epidemiology and any other related is an added advantage - Experience managing pharmacy in a clinical care and clinical research
setting. - Experience working at a middle or senior management level providing
technical guidance - Experience managing a team.
- Possession of post graduate certification in related fields, GPP and
GCP certification is an added advantage. - Should possess excellent computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft
Office e.g. Word, Excel and Database management skills, office equipment
(printer, fax, copier, and scanner). - Working knowledge of MS Dynamics-Navision
- Organized with excellent attention to detail
- Excellent organisation and management skills
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with ability to
communicate throughout all levels of the organisation. - Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work under pressure and to meet tight deadline
