Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
Job Summary: The Theatre Assistant will assist in SMC processes as required, ensure infection prevention protocols, clean, disinfect and sterilize Theatre equipment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in circumcision processes, conduct follow up of clients and ensure proper documentation of sterilisation processes documentation.
- Support cleaning and sterilization of all theatre linen including patient gowns, theatre gowns and drapes.
- Work with the sterilization nurse in Collecting, cleaning, disinfecting, packing and sterilizing surgical instruments and linen.
- Under supervision of the site team leader, ensure infection prevention and health care waste SOPs are adhered to and, that the minimum standards of SMC are adhered to.
- Regularly clean the theatre environment and it surroundings at the site and in circumcision outreaches as guided by MoH standards.
- Management of theatre waste using segregation systems as guided by MoH infection control SOPs.
- Manage the disposal of theatre waste as guided by MoH infection control SOPs.
- Ensure proper Cleaning, disinfecting, packing and sterilization of surgical instruments.
- Work with the team to ensure the set VMMC targets are met in accordance with guidelines.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Minimum requirement is a certificate in a health-related discipline from a recognised Health institution (e.g. a Certificate in Nursing).
- At least two years working experience in an operating theatre setting.
- A certificate in SMC training is an added advantage.
- Basic training and understanding of key infection prevention requirements in a health care setting.
- Basic understanding of HIV/AIDS concepts.
- Active practicing license and registration with Uganda Nurses and Midwifery Council.
- Has great attention to detail, can work effectively as a member of a team, is a driven and resilient team member.
