Job Summary:  War Child is recruiting a Youth Coordinator, to support and build capacity of local partners in effectively implementing Youth programing in line with War Child standards and donor compliance requirements.

 

The Coordinator – Youth is part of the Uganda country program team and reports to the Programme Development and Quality Manager. S/he will be responsible for the provision of technical support to and building the capacity of local partners to effectively deliver Youth programmes to refugees and new arrivals in Northern, West Nile and South Western locations of Uganda. This role requires a person with an understanding of group dynamics for youth and other vulnerable groups within the humanitarian as well as a strong belief in the potential for young people to influence positive change through participation.

 

Essential functional relationships include: Program Implementation Manager, Senior Education Coordinator, Program Development Advisor Psycho Social Support, M&E Coordinator, Regional Project Coordinators.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Programme Coordination and Direct Technical Support on Youth Engagement and participation

  • Lead development of technical SOPs and guides for training and skilling youth in group formation, group dynamics, problem identification, youth-led research and advocacy.
  • Support groups of youth to network and collaborate with other young people across districts and regions to share information, innovations/ideas and experiences using youth sensitive forums.
  • Support groups of young people to individually or collectively pursue new or existing ideas for improving performance through co-design opportunities and showcasing success/failures.
  • Support CSO Implementing Partners for youth engagement & participation
  • Support program partners to work adaptively by co-designing youth empowerment interventions that maximize their unique strengths and aligns with contextual realities across priority districts and regions in Uganda
  • Train/mentor partner staff in delivering youth sensitive programming with emphasis on training, coaching and mentoring for young people in group formation, group dynamics, youth-led research and advocacy.
  • Monitor CSO partner plans and budget spending to inform projections for programme activities
  • Support partner capacity development plans to ensure partner compliance with organisational development priorities identified from partner organisational assessments (According to WCA partnership development procedures)
  • Organize partner coordination/learning and reflections sessions to leverage program learning and enrich intervention strategies across the priority settlements
  • Contribute to Program Quality Control, Learning and adaptive management
  • Work closely with partner staff to ensure technical quality of implementation through training and coaching and monitoring of implementation.
  • Review partner narrative and financial reports and flag issues for discussion with partner teams

Reporting and coordination.

  • Draft all quarterly reports and workplan updates for youth engagement and participation component.
  • Organise monthly internal coordination meetings for youth engagement and participation component – using mechanisms as the CRFM to enhance feedback generation and response
  • Organise quarterly and bi-annual coordination meetings for partners supporting youth engagement and participation component.




Qualifications Skills and Experience:

  • Degree or post-graduate qualification ideally with a specialization in social sciences, Social Work and social Administration or any youth related course.
  • At least five (5) years’ work experience in participatory programming for youth and other vulnerable groups youth with advocacy engagements that seek to give voice to vulnerable groups (young people, refugees, persons with disability)
  • Past experience in partnership management especially for CSOs and potentially humanitarian sector in Uganda
  • Facilitation of training & workshops, coaching and mentoring staff
  • Understands group dynamics for youth and other vulnerable groups within the humanitarian setting in Uganda is an added advantage
  • A strong belief in the potential for young people influence positive change through participation
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, positive attitude, resilient, willing to learn new skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, and prioritise workload according to the changing needs of the programme
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team, and a commitment to capacity building
  • Enthusiastic, flexible and with the ability to work long hours in sometimes remote contexts with basic amenities to meet the needs of the programme
  • Strong social and communication skills for team management as well as for liaising with external stakeholders and partners.
  • Facilitation, mentorship and coaching skills
  • Problem solving skills, able to deal independently with field work related issues
  • Results oriented
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of refugee languages spoken in West Nile/Northern Uganda is an asset.
  • Strong computer, report writing and documentation skills
