Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
Job Summary: The Lab Assistant will carry out basic laboratory tests for diagnosis of diseases with focus on Gene Xpert testing and other HIV/AIDS related tests.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Preparing laboratory reagents and stains for routine investigations;
- Conduct Gene Xpert tests and reporting at the supported facility
- Carry out basic laboratory tests and submit reports to Laboratory Technicians/Technologists;
- Observe safety and quality assurance practices in laboratories;
- Cleaning laboratory equipment regularly;
- Requisitioning necessary supplies for laboratory work and keeping records of stock;
- Participating in SLIPTA activities;
- Supporting EQA activities in relation to HIV DTS, TB, Gene Xpert and CD4;
- Compiling and submitting daily and periodic laboratory reports;
- Ensure Safe disposal of Laboratory wastes;
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- Certificate in Medical Laboratory techniques
- Must have a Certificate in Medical Laboratory Techniques from a recognized Training Institution.
- Must be registered and licensed with the Allied Health Professionals Council.
- At least two years of working in a clinical setting/ facility, preferably in an HIV/AIDS setting.
- Additional experience in logistics management of ART commodities
- Computer Knowledge and skills, as well as good presentation and report writing skills
- Communication skills and ability to speak local languages is an added advantage
- HIV Counseling and Interpersonal skills
- Concern for quality and standards of Laboratory services;
- Result orientation;
- Communicating effectively; and
- Good Time management
- Willingness to work and live in rural areas is required.
