The
Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda (CCFU) is a registered, not-for-profit
national NGO dedicated to promoting the recognition of culture as vital for
human development that responds to Uganda’s national identity and diversity.
The Foundation’s mission is premised on the conviction that the positive
aspects of culture can be harnessed to bring about sustainable, social and
economic transformation.
In
Uganda, there are limited interventions by both State and non-State actors to
explore the potential role of cultural resources in the promotion of women and
girl’s rights and protection against GBV. Yet the existence of cultural values,
principles, and norms in some cultural communities provide for the well-being
of women and girls. With support from Diakonia and the Embassy of Sweden, the
Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda (CCFU) is implementing a project in Gulu,
Kitgum, Lamwo, Pader and Lira that has revealed the existence of culturally
defined rights that support the rights of women and girls to land, marital
rights, inheritance rights, the right to protection from gender-based violence,
the rights to information and education, the right to participation as well as
the right to access to justice. Through this project, cultural leaders
identified and reaffirmed these rights, and committed to increasing the use of
cultural values, norms, and practices in decision making and conflict
resolution to defend the rights of women in their areas of jurisdiction.
The Research Project:
Building
on the above experience, with support from UN Women, CCFU has now embarked on a
project that aims at harnessing cultural resources in areas under the five
cultural institutions of Alur, Buganda, Busoga, Karamoja and Tooro in an effort
to contribute to ending violence against women and girls in Uganda and
enhancing women and girls’ access to justice. One of the main components of
this project is research on positive and negative cultural resources and
practices, examining worldviews, norms, values, beliefs, principles and practices
that abet or prevent any form of violence against women and girls in the
above-mentioned cultures. The research will involve the application of a wide
range of participatory research tools to generate relevant information from
women, girls, cultural leaders/institutions, government agencies and civil
society organisations. The output, which will be an analytical report, will be
used for policy advocacy activities at the local, national and international
levels targeting a range of development partners to influence their opinions
about the relevance of cultural resources in combating GBV and influencing
legal gender-responsive instruments.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Project
planning, coordination, implementation, monitoring and evaluation - Research
design, implementation, documentation and dissemination - Capacity
building interventions related to the project - Project
visibility through publicity and networking with relevant partners and publics,
in collaboration with CCFU’s Communications Officer - Contribute
to CCFU’s institutional development
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal
candidate must hold a Masters in Gender Studies / Cultural Heritage Studies/
Public Administration / Social Work and Social Administration/Development
Studies - A minimum
of five years’ working experience - A track
record of engagement in culture and/or gender-related programmes - Good
research and project management skills - Proficiency
in written and verbal English (knowledge of one or more indigenous languages
would be an advantage) - Good
public relations and networking skills - A team
player
Professional fees: The professional fees shall be paid basing on a daily rate
for the total number of days worked. A standard fee for per diem and transport
(using CCFU’s rates) will be provided to facilitate field activities. Claims
for stationery, photocopying, and other incidentals directly related to the
execution of the assignment may be reimbursed upon presentation of receipts,
subject to approval by CCFU.
Duration: 16 months.
Research
Officers (2 Job Vacancies)
Key
Duties and Responsibilities:
The
Research Officers will be expected to:
- Familiarize
him/herself with secondary literature relevant to the research assignment and
cultural contexts in the project areas - Participate
in the development of the research process, tools and inception plan - Participate
in the fieldwork research in the program research areas - Analyze
research findings from all research locations - Produce and
present an analytical draft report to CCFU through the lead researcher - Incorporate
feedback from stakeholders and produce a final consolidated research report
Qualifications,
Skills and Experience:
The
research officers should have:
- A Master’s
or at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Development Studies / Gender
Studies/Cultural Heritage Studies/ Social Work and Social Administration or
other related fields - A minimum
of five years’ experience in qualitative research work. - A track
record of developing and assessing research processes and tools - Demonstrated
abilities to work in a team - Proficient
in written and verbal English (and knowledge of one or more indigenous
languages would be an advantage)

Job Summary: The Lead Consultant /
Researcher will coordinate and manage the research component on “The role of
cultural resources in combating violence against women and girls in Uganda”.
Key
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Familiarize
him/herself with secondary literature relevant to the research assignment and
cultural contexts in the project areas - Participate
in pre-visits to the research project locations - Develop an
inception plan for the research assignment - Design the
research process and tools - Supervise
researchers in 5 districts (in preparation, fieldwork, data collection and
analysis) - Analyze
research findings from all research locations - Produce and
present an analytical draft report to selected stakeholders for
validation - Incorporate
feedback from stakeholders and produce a final consolidated research report - Academic
qualifications and competence of the lead researcher
Qualifications,
Skills and Experience:
The Lead
Consultant should have:
- A Ph.D. or
at least a Master’s Degree in Development Studies / Gender Studies /Cultural
Heritage Studies/ Social Work and Social Administration or other related fields - A minimum
of eight years’ experience in qualitative research work - A track
record of developing and assessing research processes and tools - Demonstrated
leadership skills and the ability to supervise a team of researchers - Proficient
in written and verbal English (and knowledge of one or more indigenous
languages would be an advantage)
