Job Summary: As the Head of Growth and Incubation vertical for MTN Uganda, the General Manager will be responsible for scouting new revenue opportunities, creating business and revenue plans, developing business models, and fostering an ecosystem that culminates into fully operational business or revenue lines.
The General Manager is also tasked with incubating nascent or high-level transformations of existing revenue lines across home, digital, EBU and other high impacting Opco functions. This involves crafting the strategic vision, providing primary resources, developing core services, launch or hyper care for a limited period, and ultimately transferring them into independent business units or service lines.
As a part of Opco structure, GM will play a dual role as a Growth and Incubation vertical lead. The role will contribute to MTN’s long-term success, by expanding market presence through novel growth opportunities and enable incubation activities for both emerging and existing revenue lines until they mature and achieve the desired outcome.
The General Manager will also be accountable for fostering innovation, driving expansion, and contribute to MTN Uganda’s overall strategic goals, to achieve profitable growth, and creating sustainable value within MTN Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
New Business/Revenue Growth Strategy Development
- Scout and evaluate new revenue lines through market research, customer analysis, and trend identification.
- Work cross functionally along with stakeholders from different functions of the OpCo to ensure alignment of new revenue growth strategies with MTN’s goals, and objectives.
- Together with key stakeholders and strategic partners at the Opco, analyse the technological, business, and competitive landscape to support development of the new business/Revenue line.
- Define the unique value proposition of the identified business/revenue line and prepare a business case highlighting the business model and unique features for the OpCo CXOs
- Validate the business case with OpCo Finance, Sales, and Operation team etc to comprehend the feasibility, estimate the cost and impact of the identified Business/Revenue line.
- Develop high level implementation plan for the identified revenue growth opportunities including frameworks, models, and roadmaps.
Stabilization of Existing Revenue Lines
- Develop strategies to increase revenue from identified fledgling revenue lines across Home, Digital, EBU and other Opco functions while maintaining stability.
- Collaborate with cross functional teams to drive growth and expansion within the existing revenue lines.
- Develop roadmaps and action plans for achieving revenue growth targets over defined timeframe. Streamline processes and operations related for the respective revenue lines for smoother functioning.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance sales and marketing efforts, customer acquisition and retention.
- Provide hyper care support during the initial stages of implementation to address any issues and optimize performance.
- Plan and execute the successful transition of incubated projects into independent business units as they reach maturity.
- Identify effective distribution channels to reach target customers and liaison with the respective Opco stakeholders to optimize targeted customer segment penetration.
- Work closely with the CVM team to develop customer acquisition and retention strategies to retain customers through personalized offers, and support services amongst others.
Business/Revenue line Performance Monitoring
- Develop performance frameworks for tracking and evaluating business and revenue line performance.
- Define specific goals, KPIs for the revenue growth and set pre-defined success metrics to track and monitor the progress of new business/revenue lines.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to the stability of the new/ existing revenue lines.
- Lead the in-depth analysis of revenue line performance to identify strengths and weaknesses.
- Review scenario modelling to predict potential threats that may impact the revenue lines and take corrective actions.
- Monitor financial performance and make data-driven decisions to achieve revenue targets.
- Regularly assess progress against goals and provide reports to senior leadership.
Risk Management
- Collaborate with the risk and compliance team to ensure that the new revenue lines adhere to relevant industry regulations and compliance standards.
- Identify and indicate vulnerability to risks while developing growth strategy by measuring risk exposure ratio.
- Identify potential risks and challenges associated with growth initiatives and develop mitigation strategies.
- Evaluate the financial strength of the business or revenue line to withstand potential risks and work closely with the finance and risk team to identify interventions to minimize financial risk.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and ethical standards as defined by risk and compliance team.
- Review periodic assessments of primary controls to test the resilience of business processes and ensure the OpCo is prepared for unforeseen events.
Functional Delivery
- Establish, monitor, and align the direction, strategy and results of the Growth and Incubation vertical.
- Lead all new partnership and business development initiatives for the function.
- Monitor true-value metrics to measure the impact and benefit of the function to Opco.
- Drive continuous improvement across the identified business units/revenue lines.
- Support the selected revenue lines in identifying and performing viability analysis of new products and business opportunities including those presented by potential partners.
- Establish and nurture relationships with key stakeholders, including potential clients, partners, and investors.
- Lead the development and incubation of new business, revenue and services lines that align with the MTN’s growth objectives.
- Foster a culture of innovation within the function, encouraging employees to generate and pursue creative ideas.
- Share inputs on pricing strategies and business models with the finance team to optimize revenue generation while remaining competitive in the market.
- Develop and maintain bank of sources and contacts that support opportunity identification and development.
- Obtain buy in from the Executive team to give priority to proposed ventures and allocate the necessary resources to secure contractual agreements with strategic partners.
- Maintain close relationships with all the relevant stakeholders, to ensure that MTN is well positioned to harness the opportunities created in new/existing territories.
- Provide guidance to management on new Business Development opportunities, aligned to either the current business verticals or new business opportunities in new product/service offerings.
- Develop and foster best practices and lessons learned with business leaders (regional).
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree (Business Management / Administration / Development, Marketing, Finance, or related field)
- Post-Graduate degree is preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience preferably with Global MNCs.
- 4-5 years of Senior Management Experience.
- 7+ years’ experience in business development, sales, client relations management.
- 2-3 years of managerial experience in leading verticals such as Fibre to Home / Digital / EBU (Advantageous).
- Proven experience in product management, business development, or innovation roles.
- Excellent understanding of business development, sales and client relations methods, techniques, and best practices.
- Ability to develop and execute a clear growth strategy along with strong leadership skills to guide their team.
- Experience in supporting, influencing, and committing different operations towards specific business strategy & plans.
- Strong understanding of market trends, emerging technologies, and disruptive business models in the telecom industry.
- Demonstrated ability to drive cross-functional collaboration and lead teams toward successful outcomes.
- Hands on understanding of financial statements, fundraising, and financial modelling.
- Project management expertise with a focus on delivering results on time and within budget.
- Proficiency in data analysis and using insights to inform strategic decisions.
- Worked across diverse cultures and geographies.
