Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
Job Summary: The Head StART Project Coordinator will lead research implementation in twelve health centers located in refugee settlements in midwestern (Kyaka, Rwamwanja, and Kyangwali) and southwestern (Nakivale and Oruchinga) Uganda. This person will help oversee study Research Assistants and will coordinate participation of Medical Teams International study personnel.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as the liaison between Makerere University-IDI, Medical Teams International, and the University of Washington keeping all team members informed and involved
- Frequent travel to health center study sites in refugee settlements in midwestern and southwestern Uganda
- Assist with study document preparation
- Help lead study protocol training for Research Assistants and other study personnel
- Supervise and coordinate the activities of study Research Assistants including conducting annual performance reviews
- Function as the focal person for study activities
- Meticulous record keeping for timely tracking and submitting of study-related expenses on behalf of the team (including the Research Assistants and study-related personnel)
- Be up to date on study progress and safeguard study timelines
- Write monthly study progress reports to be shared with Makerere University, Medical Teams International, and the University of Washington
- Write an annual study report for submission to regulatory authorities and to be shared with Makerere University, Medical Teams International, and the University of Washington
- Follow up with IRB’s, UNCST, and other regulatory authorities concerning study approval and renewals
- Help coordinate and oversee quality analysis/quality control of all collected research data
- Monitor program activities in relation to established program goals; within established program parameters, determine variance from program standards
- Use statistical and database management programs to analyze data and prepare summary narrative reports, graphs, tables, charts and illustrations
- May oversee the preparation of publications
- Attend and help lead regular study meetings
- Carry out additional study-related duties assigned by the core investigators

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in social work, public health, community psychology, monitoring and evaluation, or a health-related field; a Master of Public Health is an added advantage
- At least two years’ work experience in health-related community work
- One year of experience with data management and analysis preferred
- Possess strong managerial skills to operate independently with limited direct supervision of day-to-day activities and to lead results-driven project teams and work groups
- Possess skills in problem solving and community engagement
- Strong oral and written communication skills are required to develop and maintain effective, sustainable working relationships with national and international working partners and to accomplish reporting requirements
- Experience in onsite training, mentorship, and quality improvement coaching approaches
- Demonstrable capacity in building and maintaining productive working relationships with a wide network of partners and stakeholders
- Demonstrate ability to work independently and on interdisciplinary teams with language barriers
- Organizational and supervisory skills and abilities, sound judgement, and high ethical standards; flexible and ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
- Willing to help lead trainings and intermittent team meetings in Mbarara, Kampala, as well as at the 12 health center study sites in refugee settlements in Uganda
- Fluency in written and spoken English; fluency in the following languages is an added advantage: Runyankore, Kinyarwanda, Kiswahili, and/or Somali
