Makerere University –Johns Hopkins University (MU-JHU) Research Collaboration conducts clinical and translational research with a focus on HIV, TB and other conditions which affect the health and well-being of children, adolescents, women and their families. MUJHU was founded in 1988 as a collaboration between researchers from Makerere University and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA at a time when the AIDS epidemic was at its peak in Uganda, with an initial mission to improve the lives of families infected and affected by HIV through Research, Care and Training. In 2006, the MUJHU Research Collaboration was registered as a not-for-profit entity in Uganda entitled ‘MUJHU Care Limited’ with a continuation of the Collaboration’s vision and mission.
Job Summary: The Data Manager will be responsible for ensuring project data is collected, managed, and reported clearly, accurately, and securely. The holder of this position will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Data Manager/Biostatistician with administrative supervision from the Program Manager.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide maintenance, troubleshooting, programming, and ongoing updates to the mobile electronic data collection tools using Open Data Kit.
- Provide expert technical guidance in the development, support, and management of the Birth Defect Surveillance databases.
- Prepare project data reports in collaboration with the project manager and other program staff as may be necessary.
- Support and/or take lead in statistical analysis, preparation of manuscripts and articles for publication in peer review journals.
- Develop/update the training materials for the program’s protocol and train staff as required.
- Maintain the data collection tools.
- Perform and document data procedures/SOP including data cleaning, analysis, and reporting.
- Maintain a close working relationship with the data team at MU-JHU and the entire study team.
- Conduct monitoring and evaluation exercises for the program’s site activities.
- Ensure quality of the program’s data, through routine data quality control and quality assurance procedures.
- Prepare program periodic reports to funders, the core team, participating sites, and the stakeholders’ committee.
- Participate in the MU-JHU Data, IT and Biostatistics forum activities including sharing best data management practices and support to resolve data management challenges as they arise.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, Biostatistics or Statistics is required.
- Possession of masters’ level training in any of the above fields is an added advantage.
- At least two years of experience in data management and/or statistical analysis and reporting in a clinical or public health setting is required.
- The suitable candidate must have comprehensive knowledge of mobile data collection tools (ODK and/or REDCap); data management, statistical analysis, and reporting; quality assurance and analysis methods; and proficiency in the application of standard and advanced statistical methods of study design and analyses using any of either STATA, SAS, R, or Epi Info;
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with partners; thorough working knowledge of computers and tablets.
- The incumbent must also demonstrate the ability to work under minimum supervision and to identify and provide training to peers and subordinates, with good communication skills.
