The AfriChild Centre
is a multidisciplinary research institution that undertakes child-focused research,
develops skills in research and advocates for evidence-based policy and
programming to improve the well-being of the African child. Established in
January 2013, the AfriChild Centre undertakes multidisciplinary research,
evidence-based knowledge building, skills development and influences policy and
practice for the wellbeing of the African child. The Centre is promoted by
ChildFund International – Uganda Office, the Ministry of Gender Labor and
Social Development, Makerere University, Transcultural Psychosocial
Organization (TPO), Uganda, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and
Columbia University. The Centre fits squarely within the ensuing global
initiative aimed at promoting learning, advocacy, and building human resources
capacity to promote child protection. It also fits in the efforts pursued by
the Uganda Government, civil society organizations (CSOs) and development
partners in building an effective national response to children in adversity.
Most notably, this response is articulated in the Uganda National Action Plan
for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC), and the National Strategic Program
Plan of Interventions (NSPPI 2), which underlines the importance of research
and equipping the national workforce in the OVC sector with relevant knowledge
and skills so as to build an effective and sustainable national response to
children in adversity

About Study:

Columbia University,
(Heilbrunn Department of Population and Family Health, Mailman School of Public
Health), World Vision International in collaboration with The AfriChild Centre
(AfriChild) for the Study of the African Child (Makerere University) and World
Vision, Uganda are conducting research on Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) in
Emergencies. The study is a “Randomised Control Trial (RCT) of Child Friendly
Space interventions for girls and boys affected by conflict and displacement”.
The RCT involves a three-armed design (basic, enhanced and waitlist/control CFS
packages) provided to a randomized set of children for each of those arms. This
study is implemented using mixed methods approach, concurrently collecting
qualitative data and quantitative survey data to triangulate and corroborate
findings. The study intends to recruit competent individual (s) to fill the
position of Qualitative Data Analyst/Consultant who will conduct qualitative
data analysis of approximately 144 interviews conducted with children, their
parents and other stakeholders in Omugo Refugee Settlement. Qualitatively, the
study employs various methods including focus group discussions with children’s
parents and caregivers, and semi-structured interviews with key informants. The
major themes of these discussions include explorations of existing child
protection systems and the role of CFS’ in supporting or strengthening them,
through the use of community based participatory approaches such as
Participative Ranking Methodology (PRM), body mapping, spider diagrams and
participatory community mapping of resources.

Job Summary:
The Data Analyst / consultant will be provided with the original Interview
guides used during the qualitative interviews. A licensed software (dedoose)
will also be provided to the Consultant for the length of time of engagement.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: In particular the consultant will:

·       
Develop
and produce an adequate codebook for analysing the data, which will be
initially reviewed and validated in collaboration with the project team based
at the AfriChild Centre, Makerere University, Kampala;

·       
Based on
the codebook and the qualitative data collected in each Child Friendly Space
organised into the study cycles; produce analysis in collaboration with the
local partners of the study;

·       
Produce
analysis as well as conclusions to be drawn from the qualitative data collected
in all the Child Friendly Space (CFS) study sites focusing vividly on the
thematic data analysis approach;

·       
Deliver
a report including the analysis at the baseline, end line, and/or other
measurement points, which will contribute to feeding the final report drafted
by the entire R2HC CFS study project.

Timelines and Outputs

·       
An
initial codebook will be submitted to the Research Manager (AfriChild Centre)
and the Research Coordinator (Columbia University) by the 11th of May, 2020.

·       
The
analysis of the entire qualitative data will be submitted by the 19th June,
2020.

·       
A first
draft of the report will be submitted by the 26th June, 2020.

·       
The
final draft of the report will be submitted by the 17th July, 2020.

Reporting: The
Consultant will be supervised by the Director, Research and Knowledge
Development and will work closely with the Research Manager at AfriChild
Centre. Also, the Consultant will receive continuous technical backstopping
from Columbia University, Mailman School of Public Health investigators
attached to the CFS study.

Duration: This
assignment will take 45 working days.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       
The
applicant must hold a Masters or PhD degree in a discipline such as public
health, sociology, anthropology, development studies, social sciences or any other
relevant discipline with a strong focus on qualitative analysis;

·       
Relevant
understanding and experience with mental health and psychosocial support
issues;

·       
Robust
analytical skills and qualitative focus and strong knowledge and understanding
of qualitative research/data;

·       
Knowledge
of or preferably direct field experiences of humanitarian setting research
especially in the Ugandan and/or South Sudanese context;

·       
Fluency
(written and spoken) in English. Knowledge of South Sudanese Arabic or Kakwa
would be an advantage but not a requirement.

·       
Remarkable
analytical and drafting skills, and the ability to work quickly and produce
concise, top quality reports in English;

·       
Cultural
awareness and sensitivity, particularly in relation to the subject matter of
the interviews including child protection, mental health and psychosocial
well-being.
