The mission of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is to build capacity of health systems in Africa with strong emphasis on infectious diseases through research, and capacity development. IDI has five operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research and Laboratory services (provided through a partnership with the Makerere University-John Hopkins University Core Lab) and Outreach. IDI invites applications for the following full-time positions for upcoming US government (USAID) sponsored projects for delivery of services for HIV/AIDS and related health conditions.
Job Summary: The VTEU study aims to determine the relationship between dihydroartemisinin (DHA) exposures following intravenous dosing and markers of physiologic dysfunction associated with severe malaria in children aged 6 months to 14 years.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for developing work plans and implementation schedules for the study.
- Supervises staff and ensures that they achieve the aims and objectives of the study as indicated in the protocol
- Responsible for planning & developing recruitment and retention plans, ensures that the recruitment and follow-up goals of the study are met.
- Responsible for ensuring participants receive appropriate care, medical evaluations when needed and alerting the PIs and sponsors of any serious adverse events that may occur in the course of the study.
- Responsible for coordinating the processes and activities involved in and the documentation of ethical approvals as well as keeping them active and in compliance under the supervision of the Principal investigator(s).
- Responsible for outreach activities, sensitizing the community and liaising with the Community Advisory Board
- Ensures submission of all study progress and performance reports to the principal investigators, sponsors etc.
- Participates in development and control of budgets in accordance with financial guidelines
- Performs any other duties that may be reasonably necessary for carrying out the study protocol as directed by the Principal Investigator

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- MBChB or equivalent qualification
- Two years of research experience
- Full and up-to-date registration with the UMDPC
- Excellent working knowledge of Good Clinical Practice and applicable regulations
- Ability to communicate well with patients and their care-givers
- Excellent organizational skills and flexibility, including the ability to manage and move between multiple referral sites
- Flexibility to work long hours, which may occasionally extend beyond normal working hours in order to complete critical tasks.
