The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is a Ugandan not-for-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen health systems in Africa, with strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development. IDI has six operational areas through which it works to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research, Laboratory services (including the CAP-certified IDI Core Lab & Translational Lab), Global Health Security and Health System Strengthening.

 

Job Summary:  The Compensation & Benefits Officer will support the implementation of the compensation and benefits strategies in line with the IDI compensation and reward philosophy and policies.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate and contribute to the annual work plan development for the Compensation and Benefits section that feeds into the overall Human Resource annual work plan
  • Support the assessment of the IDI compensation and benefit environment and ensure compliance with current legislation, affordable and competitive on the market.
  • Support the C&B surveys to find out what motivates and engages employees.
  • Support timely payment of staff payroll as per the C&B standard operating procedure.
  • Conduct mini compensation and benefit surveys from comparator organizations to address compensation and benefit disparity issues that may arise once in a while.
  • Track and compute gratuity payments for staff to ensure that IDI meets timelines to forward the funds to the Provident Fund administrator.
  • Support the IDI’s Health and GPA insurance schemes to ensure that they respond to staff needs and are compliant with the terms and conditions as stipulated in the insurance policies.
  • Support the enrollment of staff onto the GPA insurance cover and ensure that all IDI staff are at any one time insured against accidents and other occupational diseases.
  • Attend to staff issues with regard to compensation and benefits including issues with the service providers and provide remedial action as soon as possible.
  • Periodically review and maintain relationships with external service providers of employee benefits and develop other non-cash reward initiatives.
  • Conduct trainings and sensitisations to staff with regards to compensation and benefits policies and procedures and ensure that all staff are aware of their rights and privileges as far as compensation and reward issues are concerned.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The ideal applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a Human Resource Management, Industrial/ Organizational Psychology plus a Post Graduate qualification in a similar field with good experience in managing compensation and benefit schemes may be considered.
  • An Advanced Degree in Human Resource Management, Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, Business Psychology, or any other filed related to compensation & benefits management.
  • At least three years’ proven experience in managing compensation and benefit schemes including payroll management
  • Familiarity with MS-Navision software is preferred but not required.
  • Prior experience in HR practices and compensation cycle management
  • Working knowledge of job evaluation and job analysis systems
  • Previous experience with compensation and benefit surveys
  • Adequate knowledge of current labour laws
  • Familiarity with various types of incentives and benefits
  • Extensive knowledge of HRIS and MS Office
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Exceptional communication skills – both oral and written.
  • Proficiency in computer systems including Microsoft applications; high level of skill in using MS-Excel.
