Job Summary: The Program Officer Livestock who reports to the Project Manager Karamoja Goats Project will provide technical support to the implementation of the Karamoja Goats project geared towards sustainability of ECCD. The job holder will oversee the performance of the livestock activities of the project with focus on the general animal husbandry Income Generating Activity Groups, VSLA groups, work closely with the Sub County Leadership, Local Government Commercial Officers, Community Development Officers and SC field based staff for Ready to Learn Project and in other programmes and community stakeholders to ensure adequate implementation plans and efficient execution of the project activities as planned. S/he is expected to implement the program in a manner that promotes integrated programming with other core programs of Education, Nutrition and Livelihoods and cross cutting themes such as gender, disability, child Protection and rights programming. The Job holder may be called upon as and when necessary to support the emergency team in cases of humanitarian crisis.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant for the Save the Children Program Officer- Food Security and Livelihood job must hold a bachelor’s degree in veterinary sciences or animal sciences.
- Motorcycle riding skills are a must (riding permit).
- Minimum of three years working experience in a livestock-focused role in an INGO or agri-business
- Experience of working with pastoralist communities especially in Karamoja region.
- Experience of working with community animal health workers and developing rural veterinary service systems
- Experience of training others in goat husbandry and breeding and working with exotic goat species
- Experience in implementation of livelihoods programmes with behavior change components
- Able to demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of project strategy, design, implementation, monitoring and reporting
- Extensive knowledge and experience in application of participatory tools and methodologies in programming.
- Experience of working with local partners and District Local Government in Child Rights Governance, gender, Health, Nutrition, Education, HIV/AIDS or Child Protection is an added advantage.
Desirable
- Sound written and oral presentation skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain conducive collegial relations and perform effectively as a member of a team.
- Willingness to travel and work in hard-to-reach areas, occasionally under strenuous conditions.
- Computer literacy and excellent documentation skills are a must. Microsoft office especially word, spreadsheet (Excel), Access, SPSS and GIS applications).
- Availability and willingness to work extra hours during times of humanitarian response.
- Highly developed cultural awareness and ability to work well in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
- Ability to intervene with crisis management or troubleshooting as necessary.
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching
- Excellent time management and planning capacity.
- Ability to speak the local language is an added advantage
