Job Title:   Senior Manager Risk Management

Job Summary:    Accountable for working under the general direction of the General Manager: to maintain long-term but adaptable Risk Management standards, frameworks, and solutions, for Technology & non-Technology with the other lines of defence (1st line Management and 3rd line Internal Audit). The primary purpose of the job is to review and challenge the Frameworks for each area to ensure they align to the MTN’s strategic vision and standard of Risk Management. The role will be accountable for devising – in conjunction with the General Manager – a Risk Management roadmap that delivers increased assurance, effectiveness, and efficiency regarding the safeguarding of Financial, Operations, Technology and Strategic and Compliance assets. The role is ultimately responsible for the management and governance of the Risk Program and will work to embed functional risk management in these areas.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Tactical Implementation

• Identify emerging risks within the landscape and report to relevant stakeholders, as appropriate
• Contribute to establishing and quantifying MTN’s ‘risk appetite’ i.e. the level of risk MTN is prepared to accept, in conjunction with the General Manager
• Establish Enterprise Risk Management programme for MTN within the second line of defence model, to align with the Group’s overarching Risk Management Framework
• Establish, develop and manage the Risk programme methodology and principles to deal with abnormal or unstable situations within Strategic, Financial, Operational or Compliance areas that may threaten MTN’s strategic objectives, reputation and/or viability.
• Develop and implement risk policies and seek approval from the Audit & Risk Committee
• Retain overall accountability and responsibility for the various policies, including development, review, update and implementation
• Develop fit-for-purpose solutions that meet all business requirements and that lead to a best-possible scenario in mitigating Financial, Technology, Operational and Compliance risks
• Monitor implementation of action plans to ensure risk mitigation efforts are proceeding, as required
• Evaluate the adequacy of the company’s internal control framework established for Financial, Technology, Operational and Compliance in addressing risks and accomplishing MTN’s goals and objectives
• Initiate implementation of all Enterprise risk strategies
• Oversee that Risk Strategies are tested on an ongoing basis to verify if they are relevant, appropriate and remain fit-for-purpose and test the effectiveness of a cascading risk management approach to deal with Risks, in conjunction with the Strategy, Finance, Technology, Compliance and Commercial Divisions Drive best practice, continuous improvement and innovation of the Enterprise Risk programme at the process and procedural level.
• Develop effective Risk Programme management reporting tools and processes, to develop risk maturity in the organisation.
• Review and provide final approval of all Business Impact Analyses conducted by the Risk Specialists into mission critical activities that need to be addressed to sustain business operations stability.
• Direct the Risk Specialists in the development, analysis and preparation of specific Risk reports, relating to Enterprise, Finance, Technology, Operations and Compliance aspects
• Task the Risk Specialists with effecting any updates and/or changes to all Finance, Technology, Operations and Compliance risk documentation.

Risk Assessment

• Conduct strategic, functional, Technology, and process risk assessments.
• Remain in charge for the identification and assessment of risks, including necessary escalations and develop effective business continuity solutions

Risk and Issue Management

• Implement a problem resolution strategy and plan resource allocations to minimise problem resolution time
• Manage all issues and risks, as they become known and report these to the General Manager, as applicable
• Participate as a key member in the incident response structure when tasked with managing major incidents for MTN

Risk Control and Mitigation

• Improve the effectiveness of the Enterprise Risk Management programme by reviewing the control environment, risk assessment process, control activities, information and communication, as well as monitoring activities
• Validate the possibility of effecting risk transfer options to the Finance, Technology, and/or Operations and/or Compliance Division, as applicable

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• The ideal candidate for the MTN Uganda Senior Manager Risk Management employment opportunity should hold a 4-year Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Risk Management/Financial Risk Management/Operational Risk Management/Business Administration
• Post graduate MBA and/or master’s degree is advantageous
• Professional qualification in Risk Management (FRM, PRMIA ORM, CRISC) is advantageous
• At least five years of Senior Management Experience, with at least 3 – 5 years in a Finance, Technology, and/or Operations and/or Compliance environment, in a medium to large organization
• Experience in risk management of multiple Revenue streams and complex Operational environments
• Broad knowledge and understanding of various international risk management standards
• Strong Risk Management skills – preferably in the context of Finance, Technology, Operations and Compliance
• Financial / Operational / Compliance skills
• Incident Response and Crisis Liaison skills
• Project Management
• Customer Focused
