About SUNY:
The State University of New York’s Center for International Development
(SUNY/CID) is one of the preeminent leaders in the field of democracy and
governance with more than 25 years of experience managing more than $200
million dollars in funded projects. The State University of New York’s Center for International Development
(SUNY) seeks superior candidates to serve in several positions for an upcoming
Uganda Rights and Rule of Law program funded by the U.S. Agency for
International Development (USAID).  The project is designed to support a
number of critical national-level institutions and civil society organizations
in safeguarding the rule of law and human rights in the country through work to
strengthen the judiciary, access to justice and advocacy activities, and the
free flow of information. The project will also work closely with a wide range
of civil society organizations to strengthen their capacity to carry out
effective initiatives in the above areas.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The Media Specialist will have overall
    responsibility for the implementation of Component 3 of the project
    dealing with efforts to ensure the free flow of information in Ugandan
    society and monitoring and safeguarding press freedom and freedom of
    speech.  The component will also address ways to further
    professionalize the media in Uganda, as well as educate the media about
    human rights and rule of law issues to ensure better and more accurate
    coverage of the same. 
  • Additional efforts envisioned under the
    program could include support for legal and policy reform activities
    designed to strengthen media and journalist freedom in Uganda, well as
    legal representation efforts and the building of stronger media
    associations and networks to accomplish these objectives. They may also be
    activities associated with the use of new social media to do the same. 
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The applicant should hold a bachelor’s
    degree.   A master’s degree is desirable, particularly in
    journalism, mass media, or a related social science discipline;
  • At least three  years’ experience working on media
    advocacy activities, including some work addressing citizen rights and
    justice issues;
  • Two years of experience working with
    multiple stakeholders on policy reform and advocacy activities, including
    some work with access to justice, law reform, and human rights-related
    issues;
  • Proven experience working with the media
    in Uganda;
  • Possession of cultural awareness and
    sensitivity;
  • Demonstration of sound work ethics;
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively
    as part of a team; and
  • Ability to initiate and implement
    activities with minimal oversight and supervision, assess priorities, and
    competently complete a variety of activities with a high level of accuracy
    and timeliness.
