About Friends of Orphans:
Friends of Orphans (FRO) is a
non-governmental organization (NGO) based in northern Uganda that is dedicated
to improving the lives of people living in the war torn districts of Pader and
Jinja. FRO was founded and is administered by former child soldiers and
abductees, all of whom were and continue to be affected by the war in northern
Uganda. During their wartime experience, our founders and staff lost immediate
and extended family members, friends and neighbors, suffered from displacement,
and experienced firsthand a number of atrocities.
Determined to use their wartime
experiences as a way to help others, FRO’s founders and staff have trained as
educators, medical officers, administrators, and environmentalists. As a
result, they were able to create a community-based NGO that has the ability to
meet the psychosocial, educational, economic, health, family planning,
cultural, and social needs of children, women, and families affected by
conflict in Northern Uganda.
The Campus Intern Initiative (CII):
FRO recognizes that while university
students may have the desire to raise awareness about important causes such as
child soldiers in Uganda, their academics, part-time work, and on-campus
activities can make it difficult for students to intern intensively in a
professional setting. The CII was created to give students the opportunity to
work with an African NGO in a meaningful but not time-consuming manner.
Internship expectations: The
expectations for our Campus Interns are simple: you must complete a minimum of
two (2) advocacy/outreach initiatives and two (2) fundraising effort per
semester. You can combine advocacy and fundraising into a singular initiative.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Advocacy
    efforts can include writing school newspaper articles and presenting in
    classrooms, or can be as simple as passing out flyers which highlight the
    work of FRO, the conflict in Northern Uganda, or the experiences of former
    child soldiers.
  • Similarly,
    fundraising could include the conventional bake sale or car wash. Your
    advocacy and fundraising initiatives can be the difference between a
    family reaching economic sustainability and continuing generation after
    generation in poverty.
  • No amount
    of money and no idea is too small to create real change.
