Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd (UEGCL), a limited liability
company incorporated in March 2001 with the Head Office located in Jinja, is
one of the UEB successor companies. UEGCL’s key role is to manage the efficient
production of electricity power through power plant development and concession
monitoring. UEGCL is the implementing agency for the development of 2 power
projects namely, the 600MW Karuma Hydro Power Project (HPP) and the 183MW
Isimba Hydro Power Project (HPP).

Job Summary: The Tunnel
Engineer will be in charge of inspecting all tunnel construction and monitoring
the tunnelling site activities. Candidates will spend most of their shift in
the vicinity of the working face(s). The role requires an active relationship
with the Contractor and Consultant to ensure the sequencing and quality of work
that meets the design requirements.

Key Duties and
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities:
- Rigorously monitor the excavation and
lining of the Tunnels and Caverns using reinforced concrete and steel. - Actively monitor all tunnelling activities
to assure correct tunneling sequence including; primary lining support,
additional support, waterproofing and secondary lining sprayed and in-site
concrete; as specified in the contract documents, Contractor’s work plans
and best practice. - Monitor the contractor’s compliance with
their ITPs, participate in witness tests and review points, inspection of
equipment and materials; seeking support as required. - Identify and advise on any unsafe or
incorrect practices and escalate issues where required. - Assist the Project Manager in preparation
of scheduled and ad hoc project reports. - Report in writing on delays, observed
quality deficiencies of the works, materials and/or quality issues
relating to construction operations. - Review and comment on all documents
prepared by the contractor including Method Statements, as built
information and Operation and Maintenance Manuals. - (Tunnelling activities are anticipated to
take place in shifts 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.) - Perform any other duties as required.
Qualifications, Skills &
Experience:
Experience:
- The ideal candidate should possess a Bachelor’s
degree in engineering (Civil, Structural, Tunnelling, Geotechnical or
other related) from a recognised university - At least three years’ experience in
engineering and construction on hydro power plants or major infrastructure
projects. - Good working knowledge and experience of
site-based EHS processes and procedures/regulations. - Past tunneling exposure and experience and
ability to demonstrate knowledge of Sprayed Concrete Lining and Steel
Lining methods and processes will be a key advantage. - Possession of a valid driving licence and
experience will be an added advantage. - Excellent computer literacy skills
- Possess the ability to use engineering
geological software would be an advantage.
