Over the past two decades pig production has become an increasingly important activity in Uganda. In the last 30 years the pig population has increased from 0.19 to 2.3 million, and there are more than 1 million households raising pigs. In 2011, Uganda had the highest per capita consumption of pork in sub-Saharan Africa (3.4 kg/person per year). The majority of pigs are kept by women in smallholder households, as part of the large informal subsector, with limited access to technology information and services. Other value chain actors are also constrained by limited access to information, inputs and services. The goal of the ‘Smallholder Pigs Value Chain Development in Uganda Project’ (SPVCD) to improve livelihoods, incomes and assets of smallholder pig producers (particularly women) in a sustainable manner through increased productivity, reduced risk and improved market access in pig value chains.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Implement the CGIAR Livestock and Fish research program’s gender strategy in the Uganda pig value chains project with the support of the Gender team from ILRI headquarters:
  • Carry out gender assessments, using appropriate tools, in order to better understand the roles of women, men and youth and the constraints they face in the Uganda pig value chains.
  • Analyze participation, power relations and the different access and control of resources in the pig value chains,
  • Make recommendations on the interventions that can improve productivity, income gains and promote participation of women and youth in the Uganda pig value chains using the results from the gender assessment.
  • Prepare and deliver training on gender issues for local officials, project implementing partners and key farmers/business group leaders to raise awareness about gender equity and social inclusiveness and adapt tools/ approaches to mainstream gender into project activities, in consultation with ILRI’s gender and capacity development teams.
  • Technically support the project team in building capacities of women, pig farmers, traders and business groups for effective management and business operations of “pig business hubs.”
2. Monitor and report on Uganda pig value chain project progress and results:
  • Develop monitoring tools and data entry templates for the Uganda pig value chain. In consultation with the M&E team in ILRI
  • Keenly track and analyze project progress towards agreed outputs and outcomes in line with the CGIAR Livestock and Fish program’s framework for the Uganda pig value chain.
  • Summarize progress in a timely and user-friendly manner through agreed upon formats such as briefing notes, reports or others that are jointly defined with the Uganda team and ILRI M&E team in close consultation with the project communications specialist.
  • Monitor and flag potential risks or challenges emerging from monitoring of project activities and progress to the project coordinator and other relevant stakeholders.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree in gender studies, social anthropology, sociology, socioeconomics or related field with specialization in gender and development with experience in monitoring and evaluation of agricultural projects/programs or BSc in Research Methods or Agricultural Economics or relevant discipline with a specialization in Monitoring and Evaluation of agricultural projects with proven experience in gender and development including analytical skills.
  • At least seven years’ professional experience working on gender issues in relation to agriculture, food security and/or nutrition in Uganda and Monitoring and evaluation of agricultural projects.
  • Proven qualitative and/or quantitative analytical skills, including ability to go beyond basic descriptions of gender inequalities to discern underlying gender relations.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills, including solid experience with participatory methods and dynamics.
  • High proficiency in the use of MS Office packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural skills, including ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and to develop strong and effective working relationships with partners.
  • Highly creative, systematic and well-organized with high degree of initiative and sense of responsibility.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake fieldwork in rural communities.
  • Possession of a master’s degree in gender studies, social anthropology, sociology, socioeconomics or related field with specialization in gender and development with experience in monitoring and evaluation of agricultural projects/programs or MSc in Research Methods or Agricultural Economics or relevant discipline with a specialization in Monitoring and Evaluation of agricultural projects with proven experience in gender and development including analytical skills.
  • Fluency in local languages in project areas (specifically Luo or Lunyoro).
