Lusaka Ceasefire Agreement in July 1999 between the Democratic Republic of the
Congo (DRC) and five regional States (Angola, Namibia, Rwanda, Uganda and
Zimbabwe) in July 1999, the Security Council established the United Nations
Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) by its
resolution 1279 of 30 November 1999, initially to plan for the observation of
the ceasefire and disengagement of forces and maintain liaison with all parties
to the Ceasefire Agreement. Later in a series of resolutions, the Council
expanded the mandate of MONUC to the supervision of the implementation of the
Ceasefire Agreement and assigned multiple related additional tasks.
- Performs
day-to-day clinical duties, e.g. walk-in clinic, emergencies, - Performs
the day-to-day occupational health duties: pre-placement and periodic
medical examinations, prepare UN staff for travelling providing
immunizations, malaria prophylaxis, travel kits, etc. - Refers
UN staff to outside specialists as necessary. - Follows-up
with outside specialists. - Provides
health education and health promotion programs. - Actively
participates in addressing work environment and occupational health
issues.
- Works
closely with UN Military medical units in the mission and host-nation
medical facilities. - Follows
the United Nations established policies and procedures regarding medical
clearances, sick leave and medical evacuations/repatriations. - Participates
in drafting and implementation of business continuity and crises
preparedness plans for the duty station/mission. - Deputizes
for Senior Medical Officer during his or her absence.
- Manages
day-to-day mission medical support operations by ensuring availability of medical
supplies and proper functioning of medical equipment. - Ensures
appropriate training programs are implemented in order to maintain and
develop the medical capabilities (e.g. health education, HIV/AIDS
prevention, first aid and CPR). - Performs
other related duties as required.
- The
ideal candidate should possess a Doctorate (MD) or equivalent in medicine,
including residency/internship in one of the medical specialties,
preferably internal medicine. - Possess
a valid certification in ACLS and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) or
Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is desirable. - At
least five years’ experience progressively responsible experience in the
medical field is required. - Past
exposure and experience in Emergency Medicine and Occupational Medicine is
desirable. - Prior
experience in Tropical Medicine is highly desirable. Previous
International experience is an advantage.

training in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and, preferably in Basic
Cardiovascular Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life
Support (ACLS) or equivalent emergency medical care. - Shows
