About New Vision:
The Vision Group incorporated as the New Vision Printing &
Publishing Company Limited (NVPPCL), started business in March 1986. It is a
multimedia business housing newspaper, magazines, internet publishing,
television, radio broadcasting, commercial printing, advertising and
distribution services. NVPPCL is listed on the Uganda Stock Exchange, with an
expected turnover of over UGX 60 billion (FY 2010/2011).
Job Summary: The New Vision Reporter will mainly be responsible
for generating compelling and enterprise news / stories in a professional way
that grows newspaper audiences and advances society.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities: 
  • Write compelling and relevant
    ready-to-print news stories, features, analyses, editorials and
    investigative stories that drive sales and build the paper’s credibility
  • Make sure that stories are multi-sourced
    and comprehensive by including real life stories of affected people, vital
    facts and figures, expert views, official government position and possible
    solutions
  • Review local, international and online
    publications to get story ideas and new approaches to journalism.
  • Generate story ideas and translate them
    into stories that meet global standards
  • Carry-out research to build up on stories
    in order to provide accurate, factual and informative content
  • Generate special content and revenue
    projects to enrich the products and give them an angle beyond the obvious.
  • Go beyond straight news developments to do
    enterprise stories that have impact in society
  • Periodically submit ready-to-use stories
    to other news platforms as may be required.
  • Work with upcountry reporters on news
    features, investigation and analysis of regional issues to give the
    weekenders national relevance
  • Take pictures and propose graphic
    illustrations in order to have relevant illustrations
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The Reporters for the New Vision franchise
    should hold Bachelor’s degrees from recognized universities / institutions
    preferably in Mass Communication.
  • At least three to five years of experience
    in journalism.
  • Excellent grasp of national and regional
    issues and the ability to analyse socio-economic and political trends.
  • Ability to carry-out investigations with
    evidence of published Investigative stories in economics, politics,
    development and the social sectors.
  • An excellent command of the English
    language and a compelling story-telling style.
  • The applicants should be highly
    self-motivated
  • Possess outstanding interpersonal and
    communication skills, ability to interact seamlessly with people of
    different social standing
  • Ability to build a network of sources and
    to work under tight deadlines
