About IITA:
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is one of
the 15 Institutes of the CGIAR global research partnerships with headquarters
in Washington, DC. IITA is a nonprofit organization governed by a Board of
Trustees and has a permanent office in Uganda. IITA focused primarily on
improving cassava and banana-based systems in the nineties, the research focus
over the past 5-10 years has expanded to include research on: climate change, trade-off
analysis for smallholder livelihoods, Innovation systems and impact pathways,
and Institutional and policy dimensions from local to national level.
Job Summary: The IITA
Research Associate will actively coordinate research activities and local partners
for “Increasing food security and farming system resilience in East Africa
through wide-scale adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices”
project. The project is led by the International Centre for Tropical
Agriculture (CIAT) and is implemented in collaboration with IITA in Uganda.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities: 
  • Work closely with the project team to
    develop methods and tools for the various field activities e.g.
    participatory workshops and surveys
  • Plan for field activities, in liaison with
    CIAT- Nairobi and district partners
  • Organize for training of enumerators,
    coordinate and supervise data collection activities ensuring quality data
  • Actively participate in and supervise data
    entry; clean data, and support data analyses
  • Write technical papers from the analyzed
    data
  • Significantly contribute to production of
    research reports and scientific publications
  • Organize and coordinate logistics and
    operations in Uganda for local and international research teams
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The candidate should hold a good masters
    of Science degree in Agricultural Economics, Natural Resource Management,
    agricultural education and extension, or Sociology. Experience in project
    management and monitoring is an added advantage
  • At least three years’ experience in
    coordinating projects and multi-partner activities
  • Past exposure and experience in
    organizing, managing, and participating in agricultural and socio-economic
    research activities
  • Proven ability to work independently, take
    initiative and deliver results under minimum supervision
  • Good working knowledge of data collection
    tools including structured questionnaires, focus group discussions and
    PRAs. Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative data analysis will be an
    added advantage
  • Excellent English communication skills,
    including timely response to email communication
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks and
    work well in a multi-cultural team environment.
  • Possession of a clean valid class B
    driving permit is an added advantage
