About
IDI:
The mission
of the Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is to build capacity of health
systems in Africa with strong emphasis on infectious diseases through research,
and capacity development. IDI has five operational areas through which it works
to achieve its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research and
Laboratory services (provided through a partnership with the Makerere
University-John Hopkins University Core Lab) and Outreach. IDI is working with
funding organization to set up a new project which enables and catalyzes
research, capacity development and/or clinical management by deploying
Academies and projects, which can be supported by technology platforms if
beneficial. The first of these Academies is the Ugandan Academy for Health
Innovation and Impact (the Academy”) which IDI will host over the next five
years. The Academy
s program will consist of a collection of projects
proposed by Ugandan health partners and selected competitively to support HIV
and TB research, capacity development and clinical management.

Job
Summary:
The Communication and Advocacy Officer will provide high-level
technical support to the development of communication and advocacy functions. He
/ she will support the development of proactive and effective communications.
The job holder will draft website updates, news releases, social media content,
bulletins, brochures and other written materials. The incumbent will assist in
the promotion of the project objectives and the brand identity and public image
of project stakeholders.

Key
Duties and Responsibilities: 
·        
Responsible for the development and execution of
comprehensive, integrated communication plans in conjunction with project
stakeholders
·        
Ensure adherence to project guidelines regarding
communication, branding, publicity and promotion for all stakeholders
·        
Build and strengthen working relationships with
all relevant stakeholders: funders, project management and staff, media,
national and local governments, communities, and healthcare workers
·        
Serve as a spokesperson OR provide spokesperson
training to IDI leadership and staff and company spokespersons as necessary
·        
Compose, edit and prepare press releases and other
relevant communication materials
·        
Write news releases, and articles.
·        
Edit and organize the publication of documents.
·        
Prepare PowerPoint presentations as needed for use
in communicating about the project
·        
Support project website and social media content
development, update and maintenance.
·        
Support studio production of project messages and
materials as required.
·        
Quickly respond to email and phone requests to
provide information and resolve any related concerns or issues.
·        
Guide the IDI leadership in managing potential
communication and advocacy crises/issues
·        
Build meaningful partnerships to advance and
effectively communicate the project objectives
·        
Proactively identify and address all other
emerging project communications needs

Qualifications,
Skills and Experience:   
·        
The Communication and Advocacy Officer should
preferably hold a Bachelor’s degree or Masters in Communication/Journalism with
a focus on professional writing, public relations or equivalent work- related
experience.
·        
If a journalist or related function, he/she should
not be heavily associated with(or been associated) with a politically colored
organization
·        
A minimum of two years’ experience in
communications
·        
Affinity with Health Care/NGO preferred and
ability to adhere to the core values of IDI
·        
This position requires a demonstrated level of
initiative and judgment in order to organize and prioritize tasks, workload and
projects.
·        
Computer skills to produce effective spreadsheets,
reports, documents and presentations, as required.
·        
Detailed working knowledge of marketing and
communications principles, guidelines and best working practices.
·        
Courtesy, tact and diplomacy are required in
dealing with colleagues in every day working relationships.
·        
Excellent communication skills (both written and
oral)
·        
Excellent knowledge of Uganda media landscape
including social media
·        
Detailed knowledge and understanding of or
experience with healthcare in Uganda
·        
Requires an understanding of inter-related work
processes to be able to adapt to differing assignments. Suitable for a
reporter, someone who has experience of writing powerful, concise and accurate
content
·        
Provides routine information to coordinate the
assignments and work procedures of others.
·        
Professional manner, tact, diplomacy and
discretion in dealing with members, non-members, complainants and colleagues.
·        
Team player with good managerial skills
·        
Adaptable to set and prioritize work with varying
exceptions.
·        
Ability to work with diverse personalities and
styles in addition to ability to work well under pressure
