Prisons Project is an international non-profit organization that works to restore
dignity and hope to prisoners across Africa. APP works holistically to change
the way that criminal justice issues are addressed in the countries in which we
work and empower prisoners to drive positive change. We work with Prison
Service leaders who wish to develop services and policies in line with our
mission and welcome our support. We pursue these changes in a two pronged
approach. Firstly, by focusing on rising stars and senior management of the
prison services, providing them with the skills needed to reform and improve
prison systems. Secondly, by providing scholarships and training to prisoners
and prisons staff pursuing legal degrees or diplomas through distance learning
programmes, to support them act as educators and legal advisers to prisoners
and to then take this knowledge of the law to the poorest communities upon
release.
Job
Summary:
The Tutor (Law) will mainly be responsible for supporting and
encouraging all aspects of our legal education activity in prisons focusing on
our University of London programs. The incumbent’s support responsibilities may
be changed from time to time as our needs and structures evolve but currently include
teaching and learning; personal academic tutoring; enhancing peer-assisted
learning; partnership with Universities in Africa and UK; timetabling and
course construction. The post of Tutor is an important position in the academic
and administrative structure of the Charity. He/she is expected to be sensitive
to the requirements of prison, country politics and the wider public and to
present and support the charities policies and act as an ambassador at all
times.
Key
Duties and Responsibilities: 
·        
The Tutor is responsible for carrying out the
charities strategic education plans and resources in prisons. The incumbent
will work at all times within the prisons rules and our charities policies and
procedures.
·        
Render support in carrying out new developments,
such as those relating to the curriculum, models of delivery and partnership
working, through regular review and investigation of new opportunities. Support
the Senior Tutor in coordinating activities, which support the recruitment and
retention of students.
·        
The Tutor will be charged with assisting in the
smooth running of the selection and admissions process for the Uol programmes.
Make a contribution to the support and assessment of students, reflecting on
the student development needs and ensuring we achieve the highest results (pass
marks).
·        
The Tutor will work with the Senior Tutor in
reviewing academic progress of the students and proactively find ways to deal
with any underperformance.
·        
Significantly contribute to income generation
activities beyond core teaching, scholarship and professional activities,
including project work, short courses, lecturing and international-related
activities.
Qualifications,
Skills and Experience: 
·        
The ideal candidate should preferably hold a good
Honours degree in law (2.1 or above).
·        
A minimum of five years or more experience of
administrative or managerial responsibility in an academic environment
·        
Five years’ knowledge and understanding of teacher
education together with an appropriate specialism.
·        
Broad working knowledge and understanding of
cutting-edge educational partnerships.
·        
Proven track record of excellence as a Tutor.
·        
An emerging record of excellent research outputs
or equivalent engagement with knowledge development in policy or practice
contexts.
·        
Previous experience in co-ordinating aspects of
academic activity including leading a team.
·        
Experience of working as a tutor in a University
of College.
·        
Prior exposure and experience in tutoring
University of London legal training.
·        
Prior management experience.
·        
Precious experience working in an NGO who supports
prisoners or who has links with the judiciary.
·        
Broad knowledge and understanding or experience of
the requirements of teaching and research in a prison or judiciary context
·        
Previous experience in dealing with Commissioners
and an ability to work consultatively within democratic structures; sympathy
with the aims, objectives and academic values at the highest levels having a
commitment to the highest possible standards
·        
An outstanding and innovative teacher/lecturer
with proven academic results/pass marks achieved.
·        
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
·        
Demonstrable co-ordination and organisational
skills.
·        
Skills and competencies, supported by measurable
outputs.
·        
Previous experience as a college administrator
·        
Highly organised and flexible approach to work
with the ability to prioritise workload under pressure and to meet tight
deadlines.
·        
Demonstrated ability to lead and work within an
environment of multiple contributions and interests, exercising initiative and
work independently.
·        
Confidence in own abilities and clear commitment
to excellence in education
·        
Advanced oral and writing skills, and an ability
to present information and arguments clearly; excellent interpersonal skills;
IT skills appropriate to an office or NGO (field) environment
·        
Proven ability to take initiatives in developing
relationships, initiatives and options for action that might benefit the
charities academic aims
It is
anticipated that the successful candidate may be either:
·        
A legal academic who now wishes to provide
strategic thinking, management, administrative support and all-round service to
an NGO working in human rights and education
·        
A legal administrator who has worked closely with
the judiciary and seeks a leading role in the service of a charity who aims to
achieve academic success in a prison community
·        
Individuals with appropriate qualifications but
different kinds of career experience are encouraged to consider applying
Job Terms and Conditions: We offer a
competitive remuneration and plenty of scope for learning and development. This
is not a family duty station. The candidate will be expected to spend time both
in Kenya, Uganda and in the UK. The contract duration is 12 months, with a
strong likelihood that this will be extended annually depending on performance
against objectives.
