buyers through the use of smartphones. While offline quality control and
delivery services play an important role, it is an Android App that will stand
at the heart of our business model. We will initially focus our efforts to SMEs
and entrepreneurs in Kampala before expanding into other regions and countries.
Our methodology to develop a meaningful product and profitable business model
is deeply rooted in design thinking and lean startup principles. This means we
spend a lot of time observing and talking with users, formulating and testing
assumptions about their needs, building prototypes, and continuously iterating
our technology and business. To do so effectively, we work in a
non-hierarchical & multi-disciplinary team of 5 people out of our beautiful
team-space at Venture Lab East Africa in Bugolobi.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure and guide the team to build products
that customers want and pay for; - Keenly analyse local market trends and guide
team the team accordingly; - Communicate with clients and build mutually
beneficial relationships with them; - Develop and test innovative ways to make our
business profitable; - Take the lead in marketing and selling the
product to customers; - Identify and reach out to local and
international companies to build scaling partnerships; - Work closely with stakeholders and identify
meaningful partnerships with Government and CSOs; - Test early product versions (i.e. prototypes)
with customers; - Communicate effectively with clients and
stakeholders about the design process and outcomes of the tool to ensure
ownership and shared understanding; - Provide support to the Venture Lead in
reaching out to donors and investors; - Support the team in any other relevant tasks
(this is a startup!).
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant should preferably be a Ugandan business
enthusiast with at least three to five years of experience in working in
startups or private sector companies, preferably in the areas of trading
or e-Commerce. - The candidates should apply an creative and
experimental approach to problem solving of difficult business challenges,
be analytical, and have excellent skills in communicating ideas and
solutions to clients, the team, and partners. - The incumbent should be passionate about
using their skills for the social and economic development in East Africa. - The ideal candidates should have a strong entrepreneurial
mind and share our vision of using technology and innovative business
models to improve small business practices in Uganda and beyond. - The candidates should be open-minded and
motivated to work in a small non-hierarchical team while applying design
thinking & lean startup methods. - In addition, candidates should be passionate
about working in a fast-paced, creative and culturally diverse environment
while adapting quickly to changing needs and priorities. - Show commitment to social change and our vision
for digital empowerment; - Show passion for working in a startup
environment; - Broad knowledge and understanding of local
market dynamics, particularly in trading and B2B/B2C commerce; - Previous experience in B2B marketing;
- Past exposure and experience in working with
& selling technology products such as Apps or Software; - Team-oriented and proactive working style;
- Excellent collaboration skills in multi-disciplinary
project teams; - Excellent oral and written English skills;
- Applicants with experience working with lean startup
methods, HCD, and Scrum have an added advantage - Applicants with experience in working in a
startup or entrepreneurship have an added advantage - Applicants with experience in working on
digital B2B or B2C eCommerce projects in East Africa have an added
advantage
NB: In case of satisfactory performance during the initial
assignment, the candidate could become co-founder and key leader of the
long-term venture team.
