conduct research and help improve policy and regulation. Our objective is a
deeper, broader and more inclusive financial sector in Uganda. Our aim is to
improve the livelihoods of Uganda’s low-income households through a market-development
approach. The Department for International Development (DFID) is committed to
funding a financial services inclusion programme to provide access to
appropriate products for poor people and small and medium enterprises.
Job Summary: The Innovations Specialist will be esponsible for
supporting FSDU partners in developing, testing and scaling innovative
financial services that are affordable and accessible to low income Ugandans.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Actively contribute to
the development and implementation of IFS strategy having clear objectives and
targets that will achieve FSDU’s vision
  • Carry out gap analysis to identify
    opportunities that can be addressed by innovative financial solutions
  • Identify and agree (with Program Lead)
    strategic actions and milestones to address gaps
  • Develop work plans to implement strategic
    actions related to innovations
  • Attend conferences, meetings and subscribe to
    innovation centers to keep abreast of relevant/ and or suitable
    innovations that can be included in IFS strategy
  • Work closely with the Research Specialist to
    commission and obtain research findings on innovations that can positively
    impact FSDU’s clients
2. Develop an influencing
strategy that will enable partners to have effective / sustainable innovative
solutions
  • Develop and contribute to partner stakeholder
    analysis to identify stakeholder needs and how to match these with FSDU’s
    requirements
  • Contribute to IFS strategy by generating
    influencing strategies that will increase uptake of financial innovations
    by partners
  • Develop work plans to implement influencing
    strategies with partners
  • Work closely with key partners to influence
    them to develop and take up financial innovations (effectively “selling
    ideas”)
3. Support partners in
successful development and deployment of financial products that will meet
client (poor individuals and MSMEs) needs and ensure value for money for them
  • Work closely with Partner Support Specialist
    in reviewing business and implementation plans in order to ensure they are
    viable, aligned with FSDU’s requirements and can meet client needs
  • Meet with Partners to identify their needs
    and focus areas and successfully leverage synergies between Partners and
    FSDU
4. Increase the capacity
of partners to effectively transform their innovative ideas into successful
financial products that will meet client (poor individuals and MSME’s) needs
& expectations.
  • Share latest and best practice in
    financial  innovations with partners
  • Support networking efforts between
    institutions, that will result in successful financial product development
  • Work in liaison with Financial Services
    Providers to effectively engage with / take advantage of pro-poor policies
  • Identify and implement methods that will support
    partners in development and implementation of customer product education
    initiatives suitable for low income Ugandans
5. Support partners in
conducting successful field trails of financial products
  • Provide guidance to Partners on to how to
    conduct pilots including how to identify objectives, how to structure the
    pilot in order to achieve objectives
  • Work closely with Results Management
    Specialist to identify measures for assessing performance of field trials
  • Keenly review performance with partners &
    Results Management Specialist (and recommend changes where necessary) to
    ensure successful rollout
  • Work closely with Partner Support Specialist
    and with Partner to recommend readiness for next funds disbursement
6. Ensure financial
products are effectively scaled up to achieve strategic objectives
  • Work with partners to develop and implement a
    “go to market” strategy (how to do customer acquisitions, customer support
    and customer education etc)
  • Incorporate “lessons learnt” in field trial
    in scale up plan
  • Support the development of funding proposal
    for scale up of financial product piloted (with FSDU supported)
  • Regularly review performance with partners and
    Results Management Specialist (and recommend changes where necessary) to
    ensure successful rollout
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant should preferably hold a Degree
    in Business Administration or Marketing or Commerce
  • Possession of a Master’s degree in Economics
    /MBA / Commerce (preferred)
  • Chartered Institute of Marketing
    Certification ( added advantage)
  • A minimum of four years’ experience in a
    similar role
  • Excellent track record of product development
    especially for low income markets
  • Experience in taking technology driven financial
    products to market
  • Previous experience in sales and marketing (added
    advantage)
  • Experience in marketing products to low
    income segments (added advantage)
