University first established in 1983, with 13 teaching sites in 8 countries. It

ethnicity, gender or national origin. AKU has offers academic programmes in
nursing, medicine and education for and in countries in East Africa.
Job Summary: The Student Counsellor will provide an effective
counseling service for students at the Aga Khan University in Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • The applicant will provide effective and
    confidential counselling service (usually short-term) to students;
  • Actively promote positive mental health and
    emotional wellbeing by organizing relevant workshops for students and
    staff;
  • Refer students to other support services as
    appropriate;
  • Conduct research in areas relevant to student
    development and wellness, which may be in collaboration with other
    professionals where appropriate
  • Produce assessments and other reports as
    required by the University;
  • Update and maintain records and statistics in
    line with the University’s Confidentiality of Data Protection policy;
  • Actively participate in monitoring and
    evaluation of the counselling service within the University;
  • Supervise and support, where appropriate, the
    work of other staff working with students.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate must possess a Honours
    Degree in Psychology/ Counselling Psychology/ Educational Psychology
  • Possession of a post-graduate doctoral level
    training in Clinical, Counselling or Educational Psychology
  • A minimum of four to five years’ experience
    as a counsellor with administrative and substantial experience of offering
    Cognitive Behaviour Therapy [CBT-], Cognitive Analytic Therapy [CAT] or
    another cognitive approach, preferably in a comparable setting.
  • Proven ability to use complex methods of
    psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring
    sustained and intense concentration
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of
    professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems
