Initiatives for Relief and Development (AIRD) is a non-governmental,
non-political, non-religious and non-profit making organization with the main
aim of protecting and seeking durable solutions for Refugees and IDPs in Africa
in partnership with UNHCR, the UN refugee agency.
Job Summary: The Communication Officer is responsible for
implementation and continual development of the communication strategy for
efficient external and internal communication in support of the advocacy and
campaigning activities of AIRD. The Communications Officer is overall
responsible for ensuring high quality AIRD publications, including fact sheets,
presentation, working papers, position papers, updates, statements and press
releases.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • Prepare and submit all reports for donors
  • Write new proposals, newsletter, and all
    other reports as requested from Head Office
  • Perform social media community management
    duties
  • Develop the communication strategy and
    development
  • Ensure communication strategy is consistent
    and reflects the organization’s strategic vision
  • Work closely with media outlets to publish
    brochures, and other materials as program requires and authorizes
  • Ensure consistent framing of messages
    (Branding and Merchandising)
  • Refine core messaging to ensure
    organizational consistency in all aspects of communication including
    development, organizing and education
  • Document presence of AIRD at events,
    conferences, and speaking engagements (i.e. World Refugee Day)
  • Edit and revise content as necessary
  • Improve website content, social media, annual
    reports, and newsletters
  • Work closely with members and other
    stakeholders on campaign and advocacy related issues
  • Ensure the maintenance and optimization of
    Head Office IT systems to enhance communications
  • Attend field visits to AIRD’s areas of
    operation
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:  
  • The applicant must hold certification in
    communications or in a related field
  • At least two years’ experience in publication
  • Previous experience working with
    international development partners, international nongovernmental
    organization (INGOs) and donors (in particular UNHCR experience) is an
    asset
  • Proficiency to use MS Office suite of
    applications and other IT systems
  • Ability to write clearly articulate reports
    and correspondence
  • Excellent analytical, communication and
    problem solving skills is necessary along with capacity to identify and
    articulate potential problems and provide possible solutions in concise
    and clear manner
  • Proficiency in English and/or French

  • Make Decisions: Assess situations to determine the importance,

    best interests of the organization as authorized
  • Organize: Set priorities, develop a work
    schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details, data,
    information and activities
  • Solve Problems: Assess problem situations to
    identify causes, gather and process relevant information, generate
    possible solutions, and make recommendations and/or resolve the problem
  • Ability to work under hardship environment
    and with minimum supervision
  • Willingness to travel as necessary, work the
    required schedule, work at different locations as required
