Saferworld is an independent international organisation working to
prevent violent conflict and build safer lives. We work with local people
affected by conflict to improve their safety and sense of security. We do this
by supporting effective policies and practices through advocacy, research and
policy development, and through supporting the actions of others. We have a
strong thematic focus to our conflict prevention work prioritising: people’s
security and access to justice services; gender norms that cause and perpetuate
violent conflict; the impact of external conflict drivers including weapons
flows; conflict-sensitive political, economic, development, and security
engagement; and inclusive and accountable governance and peacebuilding
processes.
Saferworld has been working in Uganda since 2001. Our main focus has
been on supporting civil society involvement in conflict prevention and
security provision, conflict-sensitive approaches to development, and
advocating stronger national and regional controls on small arms and light
weapons. Current priorities include delivering conflict sensitivity support to
institutions and stakeholders working on issues related to land and minerals
including working to improve conflict resolution and community safety in
Karamoja, northern Uganda, and other areas of central Uganda experiencing land
conflict and insecurity.
Job Summary: The Project
Coordinator – Conflict & Extractives will support the effective delivery of
the project, ‘Reducing conflict risks in the development of the mineral sector
in Uganda’, and will be responsible for the regular day-to-day implementation,
documentation, and operation of project activities. This is a new project that
aims to reduce conflict risks in the development of the mineral sector in
Uganda. The project seeks to increase the level of information-sharing and
capacity to engage on mining, and to improve engagement between companies,
local and national government, artisanal and small-scale (ASM) miners, and
mining communities in Karamoja. The project will work closely with civil
society organisations, local communities, and relevant authorities. This
position is based in Moroto. There will be regular travel within Karamoja to
implement activities and to conduct monitoring visits.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities: 
1. Support the effective delivery of the project and take responsibility
for the day-to-day implementation, documentation and operation of project
activities;
  • Support
    the Project Manager in coordinating work with partners to deliver timely
    and high quality activities, including training, consultation, research
    and analysis
  • Assist
    with the delivery of training, including designing, facilitating or co-facilitating
    where necessary
  • Build
    and strengthen relations with staff in partner organisations who are
    working on project implementation
  • Ensure
    timely completion of internal reporting requirements and contribute to the
    completion of donor reports
  • Offer
    support in the development and regular revision of project work plans for
    Saferworld staff and partners
  • Keenly
    monitor project budgets on a monthly basis in coordination with colleagues
    to ensure optimum expenditure of funds and timely and accountable financial
    reporting by local partners
2: Build and maintain effective relationships in support of
Saferworld’s work in Uganda;
  • Develop
    and maintain positive working relationship with project partners
  • Contribute
    to the strengthening of Saferworld’s coordination with other civil
    society organisations, national and international peacebuilding actors in
    Uganda
  • Represent
    Saferworld at external meetings, and promote lessons learnt from Saferworld’s
    work.
3. Ensure regular liaison and information sharing with other parts of
Saferworld
  • Actively
    contribute to cross-organisational learning and sharing
  • Ensure
    effective communication of project activities, results and lessons learnt
    within Saferworld
4. Support ongoing monitoring and evaluation and reporting on the
project’s work
  • Offer
    support in monitoring the impact of Saferworld’s work in Uganda and
    participate in regular debriefings and lessons learning sessions with
    Saferworld and partners
  • Maintain
    a database of project outcomes
  • Coordinate
    staff and donor monitoring visits and evaluations as appropriate
  • Write
    timely and accurate activity reports and support the Project Manager in
    the drafting of donor reports
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    applicant must hold a first degree or professional qualification
    in: Peace and Conflict Studies, Social Sciences or Development Studies
  • At
    least two years’ experience working on peace and/or governance issues in a
    non– governmental organisation
  • Previous
    experience in project administration, planning and implementation
  • Broad
    knowledge and understanding of peace, governance and conflict sensitivity,
    and an active interest in the workings of civil society
  • Excellent
    communication skills, written and oral in English and Ngakarimojong
  • Ability
    to relate sensitively to diverse groups
  • Self-driven
    and able to deliver results with minimum supervision
  • Demonstrable
    interpersonal and team working skills
  • Flexibility
    in traveling and working in challenging situations with unpredictable working
    hours
  • Computer
    literacy i.e. proficiency in Microsoft Office and use of internet for
    research
  • Previous
    experience with peacebuilding and extractives projects is desired
  • Prior
    exposure and experience in designing and facilitating workshops and
    seminars
  • Broad
    knowledge of and experience in gender-sensitive programming
  • Broad
    knowledge and understanding of conflict sensitive programming
  • Skills
    in participatory research and programming
