to equip refugees and others affected by conflict in Africa to meet the
challenges of development through providing access to education, training, and
employment opportunities by advocacy and direct programme activity. Windle
Trust Uganda has been a leading provider of access to university education,
post-primary education, and vocational training for conflict-affected Africans
since 1996. WTU works in partnership with United Nations High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR).
Job Summary: The Vocational
Centre Principal will be responsible for the coordination, implementation,
monitoring and evaluation of all the activities in the VTC. The Principal will
provide adequate and timely professional guidance, supervision, capacity
building and management support to all tutors, students and non-teaching staff
in the VTC. The incumbent will actively promote quality education teaching and
learning. The Principal will encourage parents to participate and take keen
interest in the affairs of the VTC. He will ensure essential physical
facilities and instructional materials for the VTC are available for the
delivery of curricular and co-curricular activities.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
VTC Management; Overall
in charge of administrative functions. Ensure safety and security of
staff and general management of WTU assets in the VTC.
Promote High quality education
  • Actively
    promote a culture of achievement and self-study in every student.
  • Promote
    a culture of hard work among the tutors.
  • Reward
    good performance both by tutors and students.
Staff Management;
  • Manage
    the teaching/ non-teaching staff.
  • Carry
    out monthly staff meetings/weekly/daily briefs
  • Ensure
    tutors develop and keep updated professional records.
  • Supervise
    and assess tutors’ work to ensure quality implementation of the curriculum.
  • Provide
    additional support to refugee teaching staff by pairing them with national
    staff for guidance on professional areas like pedagogy.
Promote Girl’s performance in VTC; Actively facilitate coaching for girls. Arrange motivational
talks by female partner agency staff, female refugee leaders and external
speakers where possible.
Management of Education facilities;
  • Maintain
    an updated inventory of all VTC facilities and assets.
  • Routine
    update of school inventory.
  • Ensure
    an efficient system of VTC records, storage and insurance of VTC
    facilities.
  • VTC Calendar of events;
  • The
    incumbent facilitates development of a detailed calendar of events within
    timelines and point persons.
  • Facilitates
    development of VTC timetable to coordinate curricular and co-curricular
    activities.
Participate in development of education budget and procurement;
  • Work
    in Liaison with the programme manager prepare budget proposals for donor
    discussions.
  • Preparing
    VTC annual work plans and budget by consolidating plans and budgets
    from various departments for onward submission by the project manager.
Community Self-Management and participation in Vocational Training;
  • Work
    in liaison with Programme Manager, facilitate regular PTA meetings.
  • Encourage
    parents to take an active role in the management of the VTC.
Guidance and Counselling;
  • Provide
    psycho-social support to students.
  • Provide
    career guidance to students.
Evaluation, monitoring and donor reports;
  • Ensure
    continuous assessment tests and terminal exams are conducted,
    marked and exam/test analysis applied to improve curriculum delivery.
  • Ensure
    tutors keep all progress records for tracking students’ performance.
Networking;
  • Serve
    as the public relations officer for the school.
  • Promote
    good relationship with parents and refugee community and
    leadership.
  • Work
    closely with other members of the staff as necessary and seek advice on
    their areas of specialization.
Integrate Goals of Education in every day lessons;
  • Foster
    patriotism and promote unity among students and community.
  • Inspire
    students to pursue individual development and self-fulfilment through
    education.
  • Promote
    sound moral values and a sense of social equality and responsibility among
    students.
  • Implementation of co-curricular
    activities;
  • Develop
    good citizenship and national cohesiveness through sporting activities.
  • Develop
    social skills through sporting activities.
  • Facilitate
    students to participate in regional and national and international sport
    competitions
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The
    ideal candidate for the Windle Trust Uganda Vocational Centre
    Principal career opportunity must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Education, in Vocational
    Teacher Training or an equivalent from recognised university /
    institution.
  • A
    minimum of six years’ experience in a relevant field
  • Proven
    performance as a Principal with outstanding results
  • Demonstrated
    capabilities and strategies to propel vocational training centre to top
    national performance in curricula and co-curricular activities.
  • Mastery
    of office software (MS Word, Excel, and Power Point)
  • Able
    and willing to live, work, travel in a fast-paced and insecure
    environment adhering to strict security guidelines.
  • Demonstrated
    ability to motivate staff and students to perform maximally and a good
    team-player.
  • Ability
    to work independently with minimal supervision
  • High
    level of integrity, commitment and professional responsibility.
  • Ability to establish and maintain
    professional relationship with parents, students and colleagues
  • Excellent
    interpersonal and team building skills, including the ability to work in a
    multi-cultural setting.
  • Excellent
    communication, organization and presentational skills
