About SPGS III Project:
The Sawlog Production Grant Scheme Phase III is a joint initiative
between the Government of Uganda and the European Union whose primary objective
is to encourage private sector investment in commercial timber plantations
through provision of grants and technical support. It aims at increasing the
incomes of the rural population through commercial tree planting by small,
medium and large scale planters and local communities, while at the same time
helping to mitigate climate change effects through intensive afforestation.
Job Summary:  The Plantation Officer will offer technical
assistance to support effective implementation, delivery and future programming
for commercial forestry plantation development in some clusters located in the
northern area of Uganda.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • The incumbent will plan, conduct, appraise
    and train woodlot, community groups and small, medium and large scale
    planters to ensure skills transfer and better results;
  • Inspect SPGS woodlot, small, medium and
    large scale plantings to make sure work is done according to plantation
    and management standards;
  • The jobholder will also mobilize and
    monitor community, small, medium and large scale planting initiatives
    under SPGS project;
  • Create linkages and communication with key
    stakeholders to ensure sustainability of the support and project
    visibility;
  • Compile and file community, woodlot and
    other plantation documents into SPGS data base and for future reference;
  • Prepare timely inspection and evaluation
    reports;
  • Write articles for publication in SPGS
    newsletters and briefs, ensure publicity materials concerning the woodlot,
    community and other afforestation are well distributed;
  • Routinely monitor beneficiaries of
    community and smallholder seedlings grants and woodlot planting in every
    planting season;
  • Develop and execute short and long term
    plans to ensure smooth running and success of the community, woodlot
    an& small, medium and large scale component of the project;
  • Recommend changes in management and
    organization of community and woodlot activities to ensure their
    effectiveness and for timely delivery; and
  • Undertake any other activities related to
    the project as required.



Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the Food and
    Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Plantation Officer
    career opportunity should hold a Bachelor’s Degree in forestry, natural
    resource management, environment management, or any other related field.
  • At least three years’ experience in
    forestry environment notably plantation establishment.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the
    commercial forestry industry would be an added advantage.
  • Previous experience in working and
    supervising work with communities, contractors and wide range of
    stakeholders
  • Ability to work under pressure and on
    tight deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability
    to work amicably with diverse stakeholders
