Kingdom Media is the leading Christian Media Broadcasting House in
Uganda and it is based in Mengo-Kampala operating both a radio and television station.
Job Summary: The Station/
general manager is the principal administrator of the television / radio station,
and his/her position involves the overall management of the station, including
human resources, purchasing, accounting, scheduling, budgeting, content and
keeping a good relationship with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC)
compliance.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:   
  • Operate in a manner that generates the
    most profit, while maintaining a positive and productive attitude among
    station employees.
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly
    reporting to board on the performance of the station.
  • Develop and present to the board a 5-year
    strategic business plan for the station, which will in turn be approved by
    the board.
  • Be in charge of ensuring that the station
    is always in compliance with the different media regulating statutory
    bodies like UCC, URA, and Media Council among others.
  • He/ she must make the customer happy, get
    your people involved and get rid of department wastes and unnecessary
    expenditures.
  • Must answer to a higher Authority to see
    that corporate goals or projections for the station are met and ideally
    exceeded.
  • See to it that the station policy is
    implemented, and ensure against confusion, misunderstanding and possible
    unfair labor practices, which typically impede operations, a station
    policy book, must be distributed to employees. It must contain the
    station’s position on; hiring, termination, salaries, raises, promotions,
    leave vacations, benefits etc. Job description, a statement of the
    station’s programming philosophy with an explanation of the formalist
    employees.
  • Must ensure that every new employee reads
    understands and become familiar with the station policy before they start
    working.
  • Hiring and retaining competent staff,
    motivating them properly, inspiring people failure to do so might fail the
    station from reaching its potential.
  • Work with the CFO, in controlling the
    station’s finances (he allocates and approves spending in the depth).
  • Work closely with responsible heads of
    department to ensure that the product the station is offering is the best
    it can be. An excellent Air product attracts viewers and viewers attract
    sponsors. This can only be attained when all departments work in unison
    and up to their potential. A station’s success is linked to customer/
    viewer satisfaction. “If you don’t have customer desires or below the
    standards they will go somewhere else and generally will not return.”
  • The Station manager will stay informed and
    keep an eye on the Station’s further financial projections based on data
    that includes the financial implications of prospective predicted events.
    An effective manager anticipates change and develops appropriate plans to
    deal with it.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:  
  • The ideal candidate should hold Bachelor’s
    degree in broadcast journalism or other related field
  • At least five to ten years’ practical experience
    in the business
  • A sales and marketing background is an
    added advantage since the general manager’s major objective is making
    profits through selling airtime.
  • Formal training, preferably in operations,
    sales and programming.
  • A genuine affection for the Radio / TV business
  • A strong desire to succeed.
  • Undoubtable intra and inter personal
    skills
  • Competitive Intellectual and strategic
    thinking abilities
  • Proper training and experience in
    broadcasting operations.
  • A good track record.
  • Ability to make decisions and solve problems
    by analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best
    solution and solve problems
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of the
    TV broadcast rule which is time=money.
  • A background of both a news and program
    experience.
  • A marketing, Internet and
    financial-management experience
  • A clear understanding and appreciate what
    goes into preparing and presenting the on air products.
  • Is expected to know more and do more than
    anyone else and rightfully so, since he/she stands to gain most.
  • A keen sense of what is “good business”
    humility to take the blame in bad times and to give staff credit in good
    times, fairness and passion for all, responsiveness to situations (not
    reactionary) passion for the industry, recognition and knowledge of staff
    (known by first name) and ability to keep personal problems out of the
    station.
