About Us:
The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an international non-profit
organization which is a partnership of infectious diseases and public health
specialists. The overall objective of the IDI is to strengthen health systems
with strong emphasis on Infectious Diseases, through Research and Capacity
Development. IDI has five operational areas through which it works to achieve
its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research and Laboratory
services (provided through a partnership with the Makerere University – John
Hopkins University Core Lab) and Outreach.
About Project:
IDI has received a subcontract from Makerere University Walter Reed
Project to implement activities in Uganda of the Joint Mobile Disease
Intervention Clinical Capability (JMEDICC) at Fort Portal Regional Referral
Hospital (FPRRH). JMEDICC is a consortium comprising the US Naval Medical
Research Center in partnership with the US Army Medical Research Institute of
Infectious Diseases and the US Department of Defense. The project aims to
develop a research platform to address the knowledge gap of effective clinician
management of sepsis and severe infectious diseases in general. The clinical
team will be responsible for conducting observational and interventional trials
in the management of sepsis. The clinical team will be provided with ongoing
advanced training in clinical care and research to enable the team respond to
future outbreaks of infectious diseases including Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)
within Fort Portal and surrounding districts. This platform will be used to
generate clinical research data to support licensure applications for promising
therapeutics for EVD or to provide evidence-based standards of care for
improved EVD management.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • The incumbent will complement the research
    protocol at FPRRH research site by working with a multi-disciplinary study
    team which will include but is not limited to; physician, medical
    officers, clinical officers, study nurses and a laboratory runner.
  • Ensure that clinical research is conducted
    in the highest ethical and academic standards as stipulated in the
    research protocol
  • The jobholder will also consent, enroll
    and follow up research patients.
  • Administer study questionnaires to all
    enrolled research patients.
  • Conduct research-related investigations on
    study patients
  • Follow-up research patients, review
    patient files and labs to ensure completeness and continuity of care
  • Provide medical care for study
    participants and routine care for FPRRH patients
  • Refer patients for additional assessment
    as appropriate
  • Ensure that the research patient data base
    is regularly and continuously updated and patient data is sent by datafax
    to IDIL in Kampala on a regular basis
  • Take part in and conduct all relevant
    Continuous Medical Education and trainings
  • Work closely with Study Physician in
    relation to patient management
  • Attend all study team meetings
  • Performs any other duties that may be
    reasonably necessary for carrying out the study protocol as directed by
    the Study Coordinator
     
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  •  The Medical Officer should hold an
    MBCHB or equivalent qualification
  • Completion of internship
  • Prior research experience also an added
    advantage
  • Ability to travel within Uganda at short
    notice
  • Broad knowledge of Good Clinical Practice
  • Ability to communicate well with patients
    and their care-givers
  • Excellent organizational skills and
    flexibility, including the ability to manage and move between multiple
    sites
  • Flexibility to work long hours which may
    occasionally extend beyond normal working hours in order to complete
    critical tasks.
  • Ability to speak local language
