research organization. IDRC conducts research in infectious diseases including
Malaria, HIV and Tuberculosis. Our studies have led to over 150 publications
and have impacted on the management of infectious diseases in Uganda. IDRC currently
manages over 41 grants with an annual budget of $11 million. IDRC was
established in May 2008 by Ugandan health scientists from Makerere University
College of health sciences, University of California, San Francisco and the
Uganda Ministry of health.

Job Summary: The Qualitative
Research Assistant will participate in recruitment of study participants, data
collection and analysis and community engagement for the SEARCH study in Mbale
with frequent travel to the sites.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Study Recruitment:
- Work
in liaison with the Study Coordinator in identifying, tracking, and
scheduling interviews for all potential study participants. - Screen
and recruit qualitative interview and focus group participants through phone
calls, home visits, and attendance at health campaigns - The
incumbent will recruit and obtain informed consent from all potential
study participants. - Explain
to the consenting participants, the procedures for data collection.
Data Collection and Analysis:
- Collect
qualitative data through the use of focus groups, interviews and
other qualitative data collection methods. - Ensure
quality field collected qualitative data including the completeness of
data, recordings, and field notes. - The
incumbent will transcribe and translate (into English), interviews
and focus group discussions conducted in the local languages - Carry
out qualitative data analysis including thematic coding of data through
the use of qualitative software such as Atlas.ti, Nvivo, and/or Dedoose.
Community Engagement:
- Participate
in community sensitisation and stakeholders consultative meetings as
needed - Maintain
positive relationships with community members.
Administrative Duties:
- Attend
and participate in team meetings and trainings, including qualitative data
analysis and coding workgroups. - Support
and provide administrative assistance to the Qualitative Coordinator as
needed - Follow-up
with study participants who are not available at the time of the visit. - Generate
and maintain a daily summary report for the assigned participants,
including participants visited, consents obtained, interviews completed,
and any other important information about study progress. - Maintain
confidentiality of all study procedures. - Adhere
to professional code of conduct and research ethics. - Manage
and account for allocated resources in the field.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
Experience:
- The
ideal candidate should preferably hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities
or preferably a Health related field - One year of relevant post-qualification experience in one of the research
projects within IDRC. - Good
Clinical Practice (GCLP) certification would be an added advantage
Prior Work - Candidates
with a Research background are strongly encouraged to apply - Prior
qualitative research experience (collecting data through key
informant interviews, focus groups, and observations) is a must. - Prior
experience in administering informed consent form, conducting field data
collection and transcribing/translating materials to English and
local languages is required - Ability
to work under stringent deadlines, independently with minimal supervision - Strong
work ethic and sense of responsibility is required. - Good
interviewing and data collection skills - Individuals
with a valid motorcycle-riding license are encouraged to apply - Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills: - Maintain frequent contact using cell
phone, email, and Skype - Diplomatic with strong leadership skills.
- Organized
and keen to detail - Enthusiasm
for community-based development work - Natural
ability to multitask, problem solve, and work with others to resolve
challenges - Competent
with computer software applications including Microsoft Office programs
(Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and internet-based applications - Interest
in working in an innovative and demanding environment with extensive
travel to rural sites - Must
be fluent in Lusoga/Lugwere; additional languages a plus.
