in Emergencies; Building Resilience through Predictable Safety Nets; Improving
Nutrition & Mother-and Child Health; and Supporting Small Holder Farmers to
Access Markets. WFP has operations in various parts of the Country.
Job Summary: The Engineer
manages the designs, provide construction/engineering expertise and
certification of the completed projects of the UN WFP.  The incumbent reports to the Head Of Supply
Chain or his or the designate, and are subject to overall normative and
technical direction by the Chief Engineer, WFP Engineering in relation to all
matters of engineering services and construction activities. The incumbent will
be involved in day–to-day practical engineering activities and analytical work.
Subject to the overall guidance, job holders complete assignments and provide
advice on engineering issues, applying the established norms, standards
regulations and providing expertise in making determinations and
recommendations across a range of daily activities.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities: 
  • Under the direct supervision of the Head
    of Logistics and in close liaison with all the other units and the
    sub-offices, carry out assessment of construction related needs and
    provide the most viable options for management decisions.
  • Provide alternative designs where
    applicable for selected options and advise management on cost estimates
    for the designs.
  • Assist the Procurement Section, Programme
    Unit, Sub-Offices and occasionally partners in the identification of
    potential contractors.
  • Render support to the Procurement section
    in and in conformity to the WFP rules and procedures in the areas
    below:          
    • Prepare bidding documents for
      tender purposes;
    • Tender evaluation;
    • Identification of competitive
      contractors;
    • Monitor and supervise
      construction works to ensure that they meet specified standards
    • Identify contractual
      shortcomings in time and recommend remedial action;
    • Carry out measurement of work
      progress and prepare work progress reports;
    • Advise management on
      satisfactory performance and issue final certificates of completion to
      facilitate payment processing.
  • Significantly contribute to the
    implementation of WFP Policies, standards, norms and practices ensuring
    compliance with wider WFP policies, procedures, guidelines and operations.
  • Provide engineering and project management
    services, apply best practices, standards and innovative technologies that
    comply with WFP standards and processes.
  • Actively contribute towards the analysis
    of project proposal to enable effective decision making on project
    technical feasibility.
  • Prepare evidenced based recommendations
    for senior staff on measures to improve WFP facilities suitability to
    operational purpose, safety, and efficiency of structures and equipment.
  • Collate data and contribute to preparation
    of accurate and timely reporting on outputs to facilitate informed
    decision-making and consistency of information presented to the
    stakeholders.
  • Take part in the technical or design
    review, exchange of knowledge and experience, keeping abreast of
    construction and engineering technologies, to facilitate implementation of
    innovative engineering solutions.
  • Provide support in the capacity building
    of engineering staff to facilitate the continued development and high
    performance.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with
    internal and external clients to effectively meet clients’ expectations.
  • Actively contribute to preparedness
    actions, providing technical recommendations and guidance and monitor the
    management of risks.
  • Perform any other duties as may be
    assigned from time to time.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations
    UN World Food Programme (WFP) Engineer job opportunity should hold a
    Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related Engineering discipline.
    Hold or be eligible for Accreditation to “Professional Engineer” or
    “Chartered Engineer” status, or recognised equivalent by an appropriate
    national or international regulatory authority.
  • Experience in working effectively under
    supervision on a large number of varied design and construction projects
    and taken responsibility for work elements which have been assigned.
  • Significantly contribute to projects
    demonstrating knowledge of engineering specialisations in relation to fire
    safety, seismic blast or environmental requirements.
  • Fluency (level C) in English language and
    the duty station’s language, if different.

    engineering and design proposals, and identifying required tasks and
    milestones. Applies working knowledge of project management tools,

    monitor project progress, delivering projects on schedule and on budget.
