About WHO:
The World Health Organisation (WHO) is the directing and coordinating
authority for health within the United Nations system.  WHO is responsible for providing leadership
on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and
standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical
support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.
Job Summary: The Laboratory
Technologist will ensure that specimens are processed and tested in real time,
by a well-qualified, experienced and skilled biotechnologist with at least 3
years working experience in microbiological /Virological laboratory techniques
in a well-established service delivery setting. The incumbent will be
responsible for AFP virus isolation, molecular diagnostic & documentation,
for polio eradication initiative, currently a global public health emergency.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • Actively participate in activities
    pertaining to laboratory biosafety & containment of Wild Polio Virus
    /Vaccine Derived Poliovirus / Poliovirus type 2 materials as well as
    prevention of unintended microbial agents transfer into diagnostic
    materials
  • Carry out enterovirus isolation and
    identification using the WHO recommended Algorithm and procedures
  • The incumbent will ensure timely
    processing of AFP and where applicable- environmental samples received in
    the laboratory
  • The jobholder will prepare and verify
    virus isolation results for final review
  • Conduct vaccine quality control activities
    including vaccine sampling and potency testing
  • Prepare and submit a regular summary
    report on quality performance indicators in the designated area of work.
  • Actively participate in annual in-house
    competency tests as part of quality assurance requirements
  • Perform any other duties as may be
    assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations
    WHO Laboratory Technologist should have completed secondary education,
    supplemented by a Diploma/Degree in Microbiology, Medical Laboratory
    Science or related field.
  • At least eight years of laboratory
    experience spent in a laboratory supporting VDP/EPI activities and
    specialising in virus isolation techniques.
  • Proficiency in Virus isolation techniques
  • Extensive knowledge of general laboratory
    practice and working environment, bio-safety practices including
    familiarization with WHO Laboratory guidelines and Standard Operating
    Procedures.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of
    surveillance related field activities
  • Previous experience in routine
    immunization activities
  • Good and effective communication skills
  • Producing results especially in situations
    beyond official working hours
  • Good interpersonal relationship and with
    spirit of team work
  • Can cope or easily adapt to advancing
    biomedical technologies
  • Work requires maintaining up to date
    knowledge on any changes to the standard operating procedures. The
    eligible is also expected to maintain computer skills by self study or
    in-house training.
  • Languages: Thorough knowledge
    of the English Language. Working knowledge of French and Swahili would be
    added advantage.
