About US:
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) seeks to end
pediatric HIV/AIDS through research, advocacy, and prevention and treatment
programs. We are a global leader in the fight against pediatric HIV and AIDS,
working in 15 countries and at 7,000 sites around the world to prevent the
transmission of HIV to children, and to help those already infected. Today,
because of the highly successful work of the Foundation and its partners over
the last 25 years, pediatric AIDS has been virtually eliminated in the United
States and new infections in children have declined by 58% worldwide. EGPAF
Uganda Country program is currently implementing a number of projects in
partnership with various donors.
About USAID RHITES Project:
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) implements the
USAID Regional Health Integration to Enhance Health Services in the South West
Uganda Project (RHITES) whose aim is to increase the availability,
accessibility and quality of integrated health services including HIV and TB
prevention, care and treatment; maternal, neonatal and child health services;
family planning; nutrition assessment, counseling support; malaria prevention
and treatment and other primary care services. The project is implemented in 15
districts in the South-West Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • Carry out routine and specialized
    laboratory investigations for the diagnosis, treatment and control of
    diseases.
  • Manage the laboratory sections to which
    you are assigned. Maintain high professional and technical standards in
    the laboratory.
  • Support sample and results transportation
  • Collect, receive, evaluate and process
    various biological specimen for analysis.
  • Carry out laboratory tests accurately and
    in a timely manner to produce reliable test results. Keenly review and
    verify test results, confirm panic values and abnormal results before
    release to clinicians.
  • Maintain and keep updated records of all
    laboratory samples and results transported collected, investigations and
    procedures performed, and results generated and delivered.
  • Correctly operate equipment/ instruments,
    perform routine function checks, troubleshoot if unacceptable and document
    corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from established
    specifications.
  • Maintain a safe and tidy work area and
    follow safety procedures.
  • Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control
    policies and document procedural calibrations and maintenance activities.
  • Take part in External Quality Assessment
    schemes and ensure proficiency test panels are handled in the same manner
    as routine (patient) samples.
  • Order supplies, update stock cards and
    maintain an inventory of all equipment and reagents.
  • Promptly report and document all
    laboratory-related accidents (injuries and exposures) and unsafe
    conditions to the immediate supervisor.
  • Actively participate in laboratory
    departmental meetings, trainings, supervisions, orientations and audits as
    may be required.
  • Undertake such work as permitted to you
    effectively and efficiently, in compliance with approved guidelines.
  • Work flexible hours according to the laboratory
    requirements, as decided by management.
  • Effectively communicate in a friendly,
    helpful and non-prejudicial manner in your dealings with laboratory
    customers.
  • Observe privacy and maintain
    confidentiality on matters pertaining to patients and staff and must only
    be discussed in the course of your duty.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The applicant for the USAID Project Lab
    Assistant job opportunity should hold a certificate in Medical Laboratory
    Technology from a recognizable institution.
  • The applicant must be registered with
    Allied Health Professionals Council with a valid practicing license.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience working
    in an HIV setting.
  • Basic knowledge of performing quality
    controls and quality assurance regarding HIV testing. Knowledge of good
    laboratory practice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
    or interpersonal skills is a must.
