Job Summary: The Capacity
Building Specialist will provide technical support to country offices and
projects in the development of approaches and tools for capacity building and
curriculum development. The position is based in one of Malaria Consortium’s
regional or an agreed location in Africa. The incumbent will work in liaison
with the Africa Technical Director to provide technical advice and guidance on
human capacity building initiatives relating to its broad communicable disease
portfolio. The post holder will also serve as a resource to key stakeholders
such as Ministry of Health, and the National Malaria Control Programme
specifically.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
Technical support contribution – (40% LOE)
  • Offer
    technical advice on human capacity building approaches and methods, at
    facility and community levels.
  • Take
    part in the development of and field-testing of capacity building
    approaches, materials and tools.
  • Keenly
    monitor the quality of the capacity building aspects of Malaria Consortium
    projects and establish standards to ensure project materials comply
    with existing global and/or national benchmarks regarding human capacity
    development.
  • Offer
    timely technical assistance to Ministries of Health and other development
    / implementing partners, strategy development related to human capacity
    development.
  • Direct
    efforts to strengthen capacity of technical staff within Malaria
    Consortium as well as public and private sector projects in capacity
    building approaches and content development
Strategic contributions – (30% LOE)
  • Design,
    develop and implement, evaluation methods for project capacity
    building activities.
  • Contribute
    to the conduct of both qualitative and quantitative research associated
    with human capacity development
  • The
    jobholder will also represent the organisation at national, regional and
    international meetings on matters relating to human capacity
    development and health system strengthening of malaria, and other
    communicable diseases.
  • Be
    a core member in Malaria Consortium’s Capacity Building Community of
    Practice and support strategic initiatives led by this group
  • Serve
    as country focal point as deemed appropriate by global technical director
    and regional technical director
Communication and Advocacy – (10%)
  • Manage
    and prepare documentation based on Malaria Consortium’s work in capacity
    building for dissemination in line with our organizational
    knowledge management strategy, in forms such as learning briefs, learning
    papers and journal publications.
  • Provide
    technical inputs as required to the organization’s global advocacy work

Business Development – (10%) Contribute to the organisation’s business development efforts by
providing technical inputs to proposal writing and programme design
particularly on capacity building
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The
    ideal candidate for the Malaria Consortium Capacity Building
    Specialist job vacancy must hold a post
    graduate degree in public health, health education or related field,
    clinical specialty additional certification in communicable or infectious
    disease
  • A
    minimum of ten years of field experience in a developing country
    with at least five years professional experience working at a senior level
    within the health sector supporting capacity building initiatives,
    including proficiency in adult learning techniques and approaches.
  • Significant
    experience in curriculum, pedagogy and training material development.
  • Previous
    exposure and experience in training of health staff at all levels
    of the health system, including community level.
  • Prior
    experience coaching and mentoring senior staff within Ministries of
    Health, particularly within Africa.
  • Proficient
    in qualitative research methods
  • Working knowledge of health systems strengthening including health service
    delivery, clinical mentoring, support supervision, competency development
    and performance improvement.
  • Fluent
    written and spoken English.
  • Excellent
    mentoring skills and a commitment to national and expatriate staff
    capacity development.
  • Previous experience of establishing strong working relationships with
    colleagues from different functions and cultures is desirable
  • Familiarity
    with epidemiology of malaria.
  • Familiarity
    in management of other common childhood illnesses and nutrition.
  • Knowledge
    of French or Portuguese is desired
