Makerere University
Joint AIDS Program (MJAP) is a private-not-for profit Company under Makerere
University. MJAP works to build partnerships and strengthen health systems to
optimally respond to HIV/AIDS, TB, Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and other
diseases of publc health importance in Africa. MJAP is implementing a sub-award
grant from Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI), for accelerating HIV/AIDS
Epidemic Control in Kampala region; with funding from the President’s Emergency
Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

 

Job Summary:   The Laboratory Technician will support
clinical care of patients with Advanced HIV Disease and TB through provision of
quality laboratory diagnostic and monitoring tests at Kiruddu National Referral
Hospital in line with MoH clinical guidelines.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

·       
Explain
specimen collection procedures to patients and collect samples according to
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

·       
Follow
biosafety/biosecurity precautions to ensure the safety of laboratory staff and
laboratory users.

·       
Process
laboratory specimens for AHD patients, TB patients and other patients at
Kiruddu Hospital in a timely manner.

·       
Carry
out routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and report unresolved defects
to the Laboratory Coordinator in a timely manner.

·       
Request
for laboratory testing supplies and consumables and keep stock records
according to the standard operating procedures.

·       
Evaluate
test results, make recommendations and communicate critical test results to the
clinicians immediately.

·       
Participate
in the implementation of Laboratory Quality Management Systems (LQMS) and
Quality improvement activities to improve AHD and TB services at Kiruddu
Hospital.

·       
Coordinate
referral of samples to referral Laboratories, and follow up on all results.

·       
Document
results of all samples sent to referral laboratories for analysis.

·       
Prepare
monthly test statistics and submit to the Laboratory Coordinator on a monthly
basis.

·       
Prepare
monthly reports of tests done under the AHD and TB program.

·       
Provide
mentorship to Kiruddu hospital laboratory staff to support institutionalization
of AHD care services at the hospital.

·       
Provide
laboratory support to the HIV and TB clinic as well as in-patient departments
regarding active pharmacovigilance for HIV and TB medicines

·       
Provide
technical support to the MJAP-supported facilities as requested from time to
time.

·       
Participate
in program review meetings at Kiruddu National Review Hospital.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

·       
The
applicant must hold a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology/Bachelor of
Medical Laboratory Science.

·       
Current
annual practicing license.

·       
Two
years’ experience in implementing LQMS.

·       
Knowledge
of LQMS and Quality Improvement.

·       
Excellent
interpersonal and communication skills.

·       
Experience
mentoring laboratory staff on LQMS.

·       
Attention
to detail.
