Job Title:        Substation Engineer

Duty Station:  Kampala, Uganda
Reports to: Project Manager
About US:
Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) is responsible
for bulk purchase of electricity from the generating companies and selling the
electricity in bulk to the distribution companies throughout Uganda. UETCL is
also responsible for all exports and imports of electricity to Uganda. UETCL
envisions: “To become a leading strategic business partner in the transmission
and Single Buyer Business and to support sustainable energy development in
Uganda.”
Job Summary: The Substation
Engineer will actively participate in the procurement of Contractors, and in
construction management and supervision during execution of the contracts up to
completion.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • Participate
    in tendering, bids evaluation up to contract award.
  • Tasked
    with reviewing and causing approval of designs as submitted by the
    Contractor through the Supervision Consultant.
  • In
    charge of reviewing Contractors’ procedures for Quality Assurance through the
    Supervision Consultant for the designs, manufacture, installation, testing
    and handover.
  • Working
    closely with the Consultant for works supervision to carryout daily
    Supervision of all physical works particularly on electrical engineering
    aspects of the substations.
  • Co-ordinating
    all Electrical engineering related works and ensure that UETCL gets value
    for money solutions.
  • Supervising
    all electrical engineering related works so as to achieve quality and
    economy of works in line with the contract requirements.
  • In
    charge of monitoring project activities in accordance with project work
    plans and take corrective action to ensure timely delivery and cost
    effective outputs.
  • Carry out any other duties as may be
    assigned from time to time.



Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal applicant for the UETCL Substation
    Engineer career opportunity should hold a University Degree in Electrical or Civil Engineering or similar
    relevant qualification.
  • Professional
    registration with relevant body.
  • Additional training in Project Management will be added advantage.
  • At
    least five years of experience in the construction and or construction
    supervision/management of least three (3) substations or must have
    been involved in substation maintenance
  • Broad
    and comprehensive knowledge of Industrial & SHE regulations.
  • Computer
    literacy skills i.e. proficiency in Ms Projects or similar project
    scheduling and monitoring tool.
  • Hold
    a valid National Driving Permit.
  • Good
    analytical skills, Interpersonal skills, Supervisory skills, Report
    writing skills.
  • Ability to withstand stressful work situations and have willingness
    to work long hours outside the normal hours.
  • A
    person of high integrity, must be highly motivated, innovative and a
    committed team player.
  • Willingness
    to travel extensively and be away from duty station for extended periods.
